Tim Roth is horrible in this film

One of my pet hates in films is noticing that someone is acting. Before you get all on your high horse and tell me that is what they are doing, let me explain. I hate it when i feel like they are putting it on - not experiencing it, living it, not being it. Tim Roth over acted the hell out of this film. From his stupid bleating voice, to his stupid contrived mannerisms, to his interactions with the other cast, I never once believed him and felt anything. It was like watching a high school drama student who wants to be Charlie Chaplin in some cheap backyard play. Tim is an unbelievable actor in 9 out of ten performances, pity this wasn’t one of the nine; he might have saved this pile of garbage.

For me, Roth is the only positive thing about this film. For a rather short film further chopped up into four segments, all the stories dragged at some point (especially the one with kids). Roth added a little spark of controlled zaniness to it, at least.

Sorry you didn't like his performance - I thought he was wonderful in this film. Okay the film itself is not exactly a masterpiece, but he fitted the role perfectly. There's an edge of surrealness (surreality??) about the whole film, and his persona as Ted was bang on, for me anyway.

I agree. He was way too overdone with the mannerisms and movements. Ruined the film for me. Well, that and 4 pretty bad stories. I've liked Roth in other films but here he was terrible.

Perhaps he was imitating Jerry Lewis in The Bellboy per QT's direction?

For reasons unknown....I resume....

Occasionally I found Roth amusing in this, but usually he was just obnoxious and cringey. I wouldn't have advised him to quit his day job as a fine actor. I like broad physical comedy as much as the next person, when it's done well by someone talented at it. That wasn't this.

Generally speaking, I remember being much more entertained by this movie 30 years ago than I was rewatching it for the first time last night.

The role was actually written for Steve Buscemi, oh what might have been...
