Something that always bothered me about the bombing in the beginning...

Nothing is ever mentioned about anyone being killed in the blast in the convenience store at the start of the film, only that there was an explosion. Why? Of course we can assume people were definitely injured & probably killed, but no references are made to it in the film or in the novel.

It must be because we're supposed to think Simon is a sympathetic villain

The stupid have one thing in common. They alter the facts to fit their views not the other way

Pedant alert: It wasn't a convenience store.

"Bonwit Teller. Who the hell would want to blow up a department store?"
"Did you ever see a woman miss a shoe sale?"

Anyways, I figured that it goes without saying that some people were killed in the explosion. They didn't need to tell us.

Well, I guess they felt they didn't have to say that. I didn't write the script, or I might've put something in about that.

Perhaps it was a Monday, the store was closed, and no one was inside (the sale banner could have been up for the coming week). Or Simon intentionally set it off in the early morning before store hours.

In the montage at the opening people were commuting to their morning jobs, and although Zeus' kids were late for school, it could have been before 9 a.m.

Even if the store were closed some of the people in their cars were blown away and people on the streets. Frankly I think the guy who said Simon was supposed to be sympathetic is full of crap. Someone who blows up buildings and subways, lies to police, and kills people in cold blood so he can get away with billions of dollars of gold is not sympathetic.

The bomb on the train would've definitely caused some casualties had McClain not intervened.
