They make a big deal out of Simon stuttering in the beginning, but

. . . then nothing ever comes of it. What was all that stuttering about? He didn't stutter any other time in the movie. It should have been a setup for some later stuttering and it wasn't.

It was just to mess with McClaine. Nothing more.

Well unless you're only talking about the alternate ending, you missed a big stutter when they were celebrating.

reply

I always took the stutter he does at the end, as a way of mocking the NYPD to his men. Since Simon seemed to know everything that the police and feds were doing, he probably figured, they would have a shrink there analyzing him, when he first made contact, so he faked a stutter, when McClaine pushed him. Remember, when he stutters at the end, it's when he's toasting the gullibility of the NYPD.

I agree with you.

Mustang guy, I thought the TC was talking about when he stuttered over the phone saying, "You couldn't catch me if I stole your Ch...Ch...Chair with you in it."

Right but the OP said that was the only time he stuttered. I was just pointing out that there was a second stutter, too. I think he faked it to throw the NYPD off.

reply

I believe the stuttering was faked. That's why at the end he said, pretending to stutter, the gullibility of the NYCPD

reply

I always thought the migraines he suffered from caused his stuttering from time to time.

It was a rouse to fool the police.

reply

He stuttered because he pretended to be affected by what McClane said and to care for his brother Gruber. In fact, he didn't care about McClane.

reply

The stuttering was part of his plan to make them think he was some nutjob purely out to get McClane.. the police psychologist points out that the stuttering was induced by his anger at McClane insulting him. Also at the end, Simon points this out when he's making his victory speech.. "thanks to the g-g-g-g-g-gullibility of the NYPD".

Ah! Thank you!
