nc-17

Does any fan of this flick have an NC-17 rated version? If so, can you share where you purchased same? Depending on what reference/website you look at, it is rated either NC-17 or R and I would prefer to have the unedited version if it is available. Also--any input as to WHY the original was rated NC-17? Am assuming it was violence related but if you know of differences between the two versions I'd appreciate the feedback. Thanks for your help.

There is no actual NC-17 version available for sale, unfortunately. I've bought three versions of this film over the years, the Australian remastered Region 4 DVD, the European Region 2 release and the Criterion Laserdisc. None of them could be considered NC-17 in terms of content.

The closest thing you can find to that rating is the uncut sequence of the heist and that was included on the Criterion Laserdisc as an extra. It's been a while since I watched it but from what I recall the differences are very slight.

I could be mistaken but I'm sure the shot of Skip firing bullet after bullet into the back of the fallen black cop is longer, whereas in the theatrical cut it moves to a close up of Skip's face as he empties the rounds. Kirby's bullet wound from the black cop is more graphic too.

The scene where Anthony drops to the ground and uses his shotgun after Delilah shouts out to him is more graphic in violence. We're shown more shots and angles of him shooting one guard at point blank range and then pistol whipping the other after realising his ammunition has run out.

After Joe gets separated from the others and runs into the alley trying to escape from the pursuing police car, the scene of the officer who was driving the car and shot in the throat by Joe is more graphic. You see chunks of his flesh fly everywhere and there are longer shots and sound effects of the blood and the cop choking to death from his injury.

That's it, as far as I can remember but I'll re-watch it in a few days and make corrections/additions. On the Criterion Laserdisc commentary, the Hughes bros stated that they came under a lot of pressure from the MPAA regarding the violence and one of the censors was annoyed after losing a battle to have the infamous scene of a mutilated Michael Imperioli found with his penis in his mouth by the other Marines.

See. IMO the R rated version could've been cut down. I've watched an edited version on TV the dialouge was heavily edited (sometimes to the piont of distraction) but, a few well placed words and creative writing, it still could've worked. The violence was just all out over the top.
