George Dzundza's character
He doesn't seem to be credited with a proper name so I've just referred to him as Dzundza's character.
Anyway, I really liked this guy. To my mind he was the true hero of the film. Initially I kept expecting him to become Captain Ramsey's fiercest ally because he seemed so in awe of his superior during the early scenes. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to see him stand up for Hunter and maintain a cautious, non-hawkish position in opposition to the man he clearly admired. I felt do bad for him because his Captain attempted to twist his actions into those of a turncoat and yet Dzundza was clearly the most principled character in the film. The guy who didn't take sides but instead choose the most moral or rational course of action. I also like it when he told Hunter to go *beep* himself because he wasn't taking sides but simply doing his job, by the book.
