why would they need an armory on a sub?

I could see on a ship but not a craft that is under water.

reply

Submarines surface... they have machine guns and small arms to defend themselves.

Also, there are armed watches on SSBNs.

reply

To be prepared for Hollywood movie break outs.

US Naval ships have ALWAYS carried some amount of "Small Arms" for ownship's defense for those times when they are inport or other situations. Even submarines.

Part of the whole premise of "Hey, Shipwreck!"

"You feel the way the boat moves? The sunlight on your skin? That’s real. Life is wonderful."

reply

I presume there would also be mandatory training undertaken in the use of small arms, as you never know when boarding parties are required. Not only that you may need to arm guards when someone is under arrest.

The truth of the matter is, unless you are in any one of the services you will never understand why they have things such as armouries on ships.

reply

Some may also carry MANPADs (man portable air defense). I would guess.

No guessing about it. Many do. Some even have Built-in systems (not MANPADS) such as IDAS.

DCNS is also developing two separate launch systems for the Mica Air Defense missile. One is Mast mounted, the other is deployed via a UUV from the Torpedo tubes.

It's there incase someone does go crazy from being on the sub, or tries to sabotage the sub.

reply

I do believe they also have a cabinet full of parachutes, just in case some crazy over-the-top plot arives!

reply

If they did, then it was for personnel being picked up by helos or airlift to a carrier or base.

reply

I'd be more shocked if a nuclear sub didn't carry small arms, it's for protection.

Although it was on the news a couple of days ago where a sailor on a British sub took one of the weapons and killed another sailor. Not sure why, but hey.

Don't you hate it when a signature looks like part of the post?

reply

The British submariner actually checked out the weapon onshore (they were in port) thankfully he only killed 1 person and injured 2, but had there not been an armoury onboard the sub or an armed watch doing the rounds the deathtoll would have been much higher.

Opinions are just onions with pi in them.

there is an armory on board British subs but i suspect he didn't have access to it..but unless there's some kind of unusual situation there's never any armed patrols on British warships, for some reason they never trusted us with guns(Royal Navy ratings have a habit of ignoring rules of engagement)

"Nee ta ma duh tyen-shia suo-yo duh run doh gai si"

reply

This is probably completely false but someone once told me that they keep guns on subs for the crew to commit suicide in case the sub is so severely damaged that it is beyond rescue.

reply

Probably?

try 100% completely false.

reply

Not if you're in the North Korean sub force. I know that's not what you're talking about, but they did have that one mini sub some 18 years or so ago that surfaced and everyone had been shot in the head.

reply

you need guns in case of a mutiny for one thing. they are always locked up and I believe only the captain and 1-2 senior officers have the key.
