Dog on board during ops?
Doubt it very much; and while we're on the subject- where would it go for walkies- or take a crap for that matter?
Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?!

It's Hollywood BS.
Especially the Aquarium in the Enlisted Berthing compartment.
Last thing you want on a Sub, or even a surface ship, is an open container of water that will slosh about when the sub is going through Angles and Dangles (Or a surface ship in rough seas)
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
CG, apparently Jonathan Archer learned nothing when he brought Porthos on board The first Enterprise...fortunately alternative universe Scotty beamed the dang beagle off the ship...
shareI cant speak for the USN but in the Royal Navy ive been on ships with all kind of creatures from birds to hamsters and ferrets, never came across a dog but i heard of a monkey :)
ps ..i had the misfortune to accidentally kill poor old Hammy the hamster by sitting on the little bugger...the seamans mess of H.M.S.Eskimo eventually forgave me but it took a while
"Nee ta ma duh tyen-shia suo-yo duh run doh gai si"
Thanks wildfire- very interesting post(of course there's always the ship's cat too I suppose). Just thought it odd that albeit fictional scenario of impending nuclear holocaust would risk having a dog on board a sub carrying tactical nuclear weapons- however I concur you have direct experience. Kind regards(ps: I know of other animals with a similar fate to Hammy- I myself have trod on a toad and a hedgehog in the dark when outdoors- quite common it seems and accidents do happen so try not to blame yourself).

I'm guessing it precipitated a burial at sea for Hammy.
Precisely why animals have no place in the military. Their safety can't be guaranteed, especially in an emergency. When the sub was in danger, my sin and I were more concerned about the dog than the humans.
