An alternate ending idea

I think this movie would be better, and maybe even more poignant, if it took the extra leap and became an true apocalypse film (in Twilight Zone fashion).

They surface at the end and find that the U.S. has been absolutely devastated by a nuclear attack. So Hunter may have been morally correct, brave, and audacious to question the orders and to stand up to the captain and all that jazz...but his actions still cost millions of lives, maybe even lost the war. One of those ironic endings that flies in the face of the "always question the morality of your orders" mentality.

Somehow I think that ending may have stayed with us a bit more (like that kick in the guts ending to The Mist). Honestly, I found the existing ending, with a ho-hum lecture from Jason Robards about what a 'mess they made' and a casual stroll into retirement with a puppy dog a bit too wimpy for the dark and epic direction this movie could have taken.

I like your idea.

And we all knew how this would end, right? The first time I saw the movie I knew right away that Hunter would prevail and there would be no launch. It's a big budget Hollywood movie, so there's a 99% chance we'll have a happy, sappy ending. And Crimson Tide delivered. Can't happy sappy and happy with a nuke deployed.

Which really didn't make the movie that intense for me. I knew the ending 30 minutes in. It was just a matter of getting to it.

I too like the OP's idea; I had similar thoughts.

"I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken."

Glad you don't write for Hollywood.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

I agree. I loved the film, but a real question of morality raised by your ending would have made this a top class affair.

this movie was about the interplay of words and ideas, the "rule of law" not a about apocalypse

Maybe, but they could have made it better with some car chases, and maybe some shoot outs between some DEA agents and Columbian drug lords.

No...

Would have been a good ending to the movie.
