The book was one of my favorite Crighton books.
Seriously, high adventure from start to finish... i may have even liked it more than Jurassic Park... (read both books prior to the release of JP, in 1993).
But the film was god-awful... It tried to be good, but i think it came down to the the monkeys.... Amy was a fake looking robot, and the monkey tribe looked even worse as men in monkey suits.
Not that i think CGI is a cure-all for depicting impossible things, but i pretty much believe it would be required to pull this film off, successfully.
The hippo part was another part that probably would've been a lot cooler with good CGI instead of a big fake looking robot hippo.
Like i said, when i read the book, i simply thought there was no way not to make a movie that was as cool as possible. It didn't turn out that way.
