4.8 rating is way too low.

This is a 90's adventure classic. I've loved it since I saw it the first time back in 1997 on TV at age ten. Although it is by no means an original masterpiece, its silly fun factor is quite high.

The dialogue and characters are pretty good compared to your average dumb adventure films. It's also amusing that it was heavily criticized for not using computer generated apes. Thank the cosmos that they didn't. Even by the standards of today, these computer generated animals/apes in films never really look real. They pulled off the apes in Congo well with practical costuming, puppetry and make-up.

Between 6-7 would be fair as a rating. I would personally give it a solid 7, I can't understand the hate this movie has gotten.

I agree! I also couldn't believe the low rating. It's not THAT bad, except for Tim Curry's douchey character, lol! But Laura Linney is no 4/10 actress and the story isn't horrible, so yeah...I don't get it either!

Frankly i you will find worse movies with better scores. You know like any of the Transformers movies.

It might be due to the latest wave of net 'tards and their horrible expectations and standards for "quality" films. As one mentioned above, Transformer movies are perfect examples. I'd posit that most people who enjoy this movie probably don't give a *beep* about rating anything on IMDb.
