Or did every character have the name of a famous singer? Cher, Dionne, Elton

Yes, it was meant to show how shallow and celebrity-oriented the parents of these kids were.

And to use the name "Elton" from the book appropriately. The character of Mr. Elton the social-climbing parish priest of the book, became the shallow Elton of the movie.
