Who's Jane Fairfax
I can draw lines to all of the Emma characters except her.
shareJane Fairfax serves three purposes in the novel:
1) She's the reason Frank Churchill could never have had feelings for Emma.
2) Emma is jealous when she thinks Mr. Knightley may have feelings for Jane Fairfax.
3) Emma finds her annoyingly perfect, and feels inadequate when people compare the two of them.
In Clueless, 'Frank' is gay, so that's reason 1) for Jane's existence taken care of. Reason 2) is fulfilled by Josh's brief girlfriend Heather; and since she's an intellectually pretentious college student, she fulfills reason 3) as well.
"I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul."
good breakdown Chocolate. Funny how the Fairfax character is made into this amalgam of bad 'gaydar' and the very brief scene with the college girlfriend.
