Clueless Vs. While You Were Sleeping

We’re looking back at the movies from 1995. What was hot twenty years ago? Which movies dominated the awards? And which movies have stood the test of time? In the Movies of 1995 bracket game, we’re pitting 16 of the biggest and best-remembered movies of the year against each other. Readers will vote until only one movie reigns supreme.

In yesterday’s Battle of the Brads, Leading Man Pitt beat out Supporting Actor Pitt as Seven triumphed over 12 Monkeys with 62% of the votes.

Today, we’re looking at romantic comedies. 1995 wasn’t the best year for rom coms. The lead couple in When Harry Met Sally both starred in rom coms based in France. Meg Ryan co-starred with Kevin Kline in French Kiss while Billy Crystal romanced Debra Winger in Forget Paris. Both proved forgettable.

Instead, we’re focusing on two rom coms that were sleeper hits. Get it? While You Were Sleeping? Sleep hits!

Alicia Silverstone was probably best known for her trilogy of Aerosmith videos when she starred in Amy Heckerling’s high school comedy, Clueless. But that movie’s box office success and saturation of the pop culture launched her into stardom overnight. Based solely on Clueless, Silverstone was able to set up her own production company. And then her career fizzled out just as quickly.

While You Were Sleeping was Sandra Bullock’s bid to become the next Julia Roberts. The previous summer, Bullock became a star with Speed and While You Were Sleeping was her follow-up. It was the movie that would prove whether or not she was a box office draw on your own. We already knew her co-star, Bill Pullman, wasn’t. Bullock’s star power shined through elevating a fairly derivative rom com into a full fledged hit. It became the 15th highest grossing movie of the year outgrossing both French Kiss and Forget Paris to become the biggest rom com of the year.

I love both movies but I'd probably pick While You Were Sleeping over Clueless.

This is my signature.

Clueless!! I didn't like While You Were Sleeping, I didn't like the storyline at all (it pains me to say that because I'm a huge Sandra Bullock fan). Clueless is fantastic and I think it's held up really well and stood the test of time, which I don't think While You Were Sleeping has done.
