No jocks or cheerleaders?!

Watching this for the 2 millionth time since it first came out, and I am just now noticing the absence of these two social groups. They're a staple in anything teen related, but I never noticed that they aren't in this film. They have the popular kids and stoners, then random groups like the Persian mafia and tv station kids, but no jocks and cheerleaders? Those are usually the popular kids in these films, but Cher and her crew are just popular because...they just are. Lol! I love this movie.

I never noticed that until now. Sure, they're a staple social group, but I don't seem to not mind having them here :)

It takes place in Beverly Hills. I don't think these people care about sports or cheerleading to be honest. They try to get good grades and let mommy and daddy pay for college.

There are cheerleaders in this film, they are just in the background and cheerleaders in many schools like they are just athletes. Maybe because this takes place in Los Angeles area is different from the films that take place in the suburbs. Fast times at Ridgemont high (same director) had the same thing, the cheerleaders were considered somewhat lame.

Where the movie is set, it's all about Valley Girls and Guys. Listen to the song or watch the movie "Valley Girl". It's basically what this is about, too. They're into superficial things like looks, money, cars, dating the cutest person, who's rich and who's not, clothing, and who appears goodie goodie but also not too good so as not to be uncool. The main point being that they love shopping and being rich and frenemies and such and aren't too into sports or the real world, really.

Good point.

I guess maybe because it's BH90210. The popular girls they showed didn't seem too into gym, more worried it would mess up their style, so I guess they'd feel the same about all the jumping around in public from cheer leading too?

Or quite likely it just happened to focus on this very 90210/fancy/shopper popular set and didn't have time to bog the story down covering all the other different popular sets like the cheer leader, jock sets etc.
