Liked the film could have done without the Ginger character.

The Ginger Sharon Stone character makes it hard for me to really enjoy this film. Would rather see it all focused on the Vegas part than to have her in it at all.

That's funny, just watched Casino and when I saw that it was on cable I thought what a great movie, Casino and Goodfellas, but Casino could really do without so much Ginger, she was a pain in the ass. She really takes a lot out of the fun of this movie, but at least she dies in the end!

reply

That's it she does take the fun out of re-watching the movie.

I watched it today on HBO but I'd seen it back when it was released. The first time I saw it I liked the Ginger character. But this time I was thinking that the character didn't really serve a purpose. The daughter didn't add anything to Casino either and they never say what happened to the daughter. The last shot of her was looking out the window while at the neighbor's house.

Well, it was based on a true story and Ginger was Ace's wife and an integral part of his life during the years he was running the casino, so she was necessary to the movie. And yes, she was incredibly annoying, but I would consider that a testament to the quality of Sharon Stone's performance -- she accurately portrayed a character who was unappealing and who wreaked a lot of havoc in the personal life of the main character.

reply

Well, she was one reason why Nicky got clipped and why the whole scam fell apart so she was important to the story.

I'm sure most of you that don't like her are men? I swear Scorcese included her character as an integral part of the movie to attract a higher female demo and it worked!

I LIVE for Ginger in this movie, she's one of my favorite female anti-heroes. Her hair, makeup and clothes epitomize the glamour of that era. And the downfall of her character mirrors the decline in her look in the movie. Basically, you absolutely loathe her by the end of the movie especially because of what she did to her poor daughter. Sharon Stone was pitch perfect as the stereotypical beautiful Vegas escort/swindler who charmed her way into the lifestyle she desired, no holds barred. I really enjoy the backstory with the James Wood character and always felt without him in the picture, Ginger and Ace may have lasted longer. Who knows? All of those people had personality disorders.

The funny thing is, Ginger never ratted Ace out. Despite her affairs, she was loyal to him in regards to the mafia biz. She was what we call a "ride or die chick" to the end. I love Lorraine Brasco as Karen in Goodfellas, too. But Ginger is the ultimate mafia wife to me. I get excited every time I watch the scene where Ace first meets her. Casino is in my top five of all time favorite movies.

Maybe it worked for you, but Scorsese never made a movie for women in his life. For most of his career he's been accused of being horribly misogynistic.
She may have never ratted Ace to the feds, but Ginger stole from him and cheated on him. She was far from loyal.

"Ginger never ratted Ace out. Despite her affairs, she was loyal to him in regards to the mafia biz."

Please read the ENTIRE sentence before twisting what I wrote. No, she was not loyal to him in many other scenarios but I doubt he was as concerned about that as opposed to NOT SPENDING THE REST OF HIS LIF IN JAIL. Ace even comments on that aspect of Ginger surprising him in the end. Like I said, she's an anti-hero. Not likeable at all but a complex character nonetheless. If anything that makes the Ginger more realistic.

And lots of women interested in fashion in movies agree that Stone's portrayal of Ginger is iconic. So it's definitely not only me...

reply

Annoying, not "iconic."

What about "Age of Innocence?"

reply

I'm the same - she's the worst part of this film.

I really feel she was out of her depth, but was trying damned hard to meet the grade, and it came across as too hard.

Her scenes end up annoying me.

'Then' and 'than' are different words - stop confusing them.

reply

Sharon Stone only got the role of Ginger because she was boning director Martin Scorsese. Call it the James Cameron Effect!

Source?

I agree, I also thought her dialogue was the weakest.
