Ginger is such a LEECH!!!

Hated her so much throughout. Have you lot come across any men/women like her?

reply

She was not really a leech i dont think.ginger grew up constantly grifting and being independent surviving on her own. Sam knew this and maybe his love suffercated her. She had the hustlers code as sam put it...

Ive been independent my whole life ive never had to ask nothing from anybody now your making me beg you for this. Why
You have to make me feel bad.

So what about andy ??????

His a good kid stones a standup guy just like his old man.thats the way i feel about it.

I agree his solid a *beep* marine

He was good he always was.. remo ?? What do you think.

Look.........why take a chance, least thats the way i feel about..

reply

From a woman's POV, I don't think of Ginger as a leech. She was pimped out by Lester when she was 14 years old so she obviously has very low self-esteem. She has managed to survive and hustle as much as the next guy or gal by using her beauty and native intelligence. So along comes Sam who tries to turn her into someone she's not (she was completely upfront with him when he proposed and told him she wasn't the right woman for him) and then he is disappointed when it turns out she is right. There are millions of Gingers all over the world and it's not for me to criticize them.

reply

Use another term if you like, but Ginger is a pathetic excuse for a human being. She loves nothing, cares for nothing except herself and money. She had no business being a wife and mother. Yes, I will criticize her. She wound up where she deserved to be--dead.

Wrong. She cares for Lester and is constantly kind to him. She also looks out for her coworkers.

The only thing Sam wants out of Ginger is her beauty and sex appeal. (Do you think he'd be with her if she looked like Roseanne Barr? Or had even simply been his OWN AGE rather than 15 years younger??) How is that any different than Ginger being attracted to his money??

What point are you trying to make? That Sam has his shallow pathetic traits, therefore Ginger isn't pathetic? And I'd hardly call the Lester-Ginger relationship a loving one. He exploits her for all she's worth. Again, that doesn't make her any less pathetic. In fact, it makes her MORE pathetic.

Ginger is definitely pathetic. But we usually feel sympathy for broken, pathetic people rather than revile or attack them.

I addressed a specific claim: Ginger does not just care about herself.

And it just always disgusts me when men will dump on a female character while giving the male star a pass. Ginger is using Sam; He basically offered her a job with a severance package (which he incidentally reneged on.) But he is using her as well, and the OP doesn't acknowledge that to put it in perspective.

reply

It seems quite a stretch on your part to imply that failure to give “equal time” to reviling male characters equates to some kind of misogynistic tendency. It’s no such thing. It’s quite apparent to me that the comment about Ginger was made because she’s supposedly a desirable woman. She isn’t, because no man wants a leech. No one, however, assumes a desire to be like Sam, Nicky, or Lester. That goes without saying.

reply

But you're saying she deserved to be DEAD?? That's pretty violent.

And it's not like Ginger didn't start off or even retain some decent qualities, as well. As I said, she sincerely cared for and pitied Lester (even if it was misplaced), and she ultimately remained loyal to Sam when she was arrested at the end, by not ratting him out to the authorities.

reply

Where did I say anything about "deserving"? As Clint Eastwood said in Unforgiven, deserve's got nothing to do with it. She died as the result of her idiotic choices. Actions have consequences. I don't have much sympathy for people who make such choices. And just to satisfy your apparent zeal for "fairness", I felt no sympathy for Nicky either.

In this same thread:

Emotionally, I have sympathy for both Ginger and Sam. as they both suffer from unrequited love. (She did tie up her daughter which was dangerous and NOT okay, obviously...but at least she was presumably under the influence.)

Nicky, not so much. He's a total pig and a killer...though one could argue he's loyal when he tries to patch things up between Sam and his wife when she's in L.A. (It's also probable he just does that because it's in his best interest.)

.

reply

Okay, I should have said "as a consequence of her actions". The point remains that she chose to do the things she did, and she wound up paying the price for those choices, just as Nicky did. I say to hell with both of them.

reply

Awwwwww....you're so cruel!

Yes, I know Ginger's a trial and she did spiral into some really really bad choices, and I agree addicts are responsible for their own actions. But she was genuinely hurting inside, at least, and devastated about someone she loved (Lester) getting hurt. That seems to be what triggers her real slide into using Sam's painkillers.

In contrast, Nicky beat someone for two days then put their head in a vice! At least our little Ginger, even in her worst moments, didn't do anything like THAT!

On another note....how scummy (if at all) is Sam? You could say he's leaching off the entire population, as he knows they'll lose in his casino....but that's our American way : ) Does he do anything really bad in the movie, aside from break his promise to Ginger to let her go and take care of her financially if the marriage doesn't work out? (It's such a long movie and Sam's in so much of it, I can't remember everything he did.) (Oh God....is he the one who spits in the cop's sandwich?? I can't even watch that scene....the thought alone makes me hurl.)

.

reply

As Joe Friday used to say, "just the facts". You could also say that Nicky was a loving father (Ginger was a godawful mother), but that mitigates nothing. Sam wasn't the one who spit in the sandwich. I think he really wanted to believe that he could have a good loving marriage with Ginger, but he was deluding himself. He also paid for his choices. I've always thought that people who gamble at casinos are, to put it bluntly, rather dumb, because the whole point of the business is to MAKE money, not LOSE money to the suckers. :)

reply

Isn't Sam only 7 years older than her? If you were a teenager, that's a big age gap but adults? That's nothing.

reply

He was born 1929 and Gi ger was born 1936, so it's a 7yr difference, not 15. You're confusing the actors for the real characters. Nick btw was born in 1938, the youngest of the 3.

Ps. I forgot I already replied here lol.

She tied her daughter to the bed. She was taking drugs instead of being a mother and was only sober 2 hours a day. She rather be with an *beep* who shouted at her daughter instead of a stable guy. She cheated on her husband and stole his money. She spend 2 millions in a few months on drugs and did not care about her daughter. She tried to get her husband killed. I don't care about what the other guys did, she was an awful human being - the worst in the movie if you ask me. She was a thief and crazy before she was convinced to marry a rich guy. Why? Because she did everything her pimp told her even getting married or stealing money. Who are you to judge her? Give me a break. An *beep* is an *beep* no matter what gender or race.

He was an idiot for wanting a trophy wife and not caring that she didn't love him and not caring at all how she felt. And thinking that by showering her with expensive gifts she would change and become the perfect wife.

But you are 100% correct, all those things she did, she was one of the worst characters in the film ... He was a successful, powerful, intelligent businessman. He could have found an attractive woman who actually loved him as opposed to just grabbing the first hot girl that he was attracted to.

reply

Sure. Ace flat-out admits that his instincts screamed that she was bad news. He knew it and rather pathetically kept hoping she'd change with every time he forgave her. He was, until the end, deeply in love with her. And apologies if this is crude, she was ridiculously hot, probably insanely good at sex, and convincing her partner that he was a legend in bed. Ace ate it up, figuring his wealth, intelligence, and quasi-celebrity status "earned him" exclusive access to her.

If Ginger had not gone into hardcore drugs, she might have been able to hold-up her end of the deal (trophy wife and mother). But not in LV in the early 80s. All tragically unavoidable, it would seem.

They were all leaches. All immoral and souless. The difference is Ginger's only power was her sex appeal. The men had all the power. That was the big difference.

reply

All that is true, but she is also a total leech.

reply

She did not have low self-esteem. She was taught to have low self-esteem.

Unfortunately so, she's exactly like this person I came across in later life called my mother. The main difference being that my mother is one of those who never managed to bag the successful man, and has only a tiny portion of Ginger's charisma.

After she had disappeared without any word for 7 years I managed to contact her to let her know my father had passed. Her first concern was wanting me to give her my father's TV set (because she thought it was the most valuable thing of his she could get) and made this ridiculous story up that she had in fact bought it herself.

I think that story summarises just how selfish sufferers of histrionic personality disorder can be.

I'm usually predisposed toward taking the woman's side, but the saying goes: "marry for money and you earn every cent of it."

Well, Ginger didn't want to do her job.

She wanted all the money and jewelry and furs and perks and benefits and status and prestige of the position, but she didn't want to put in the work.

She kept saying "We had a deal! We had deal!" and she was right, but her part of that deal was not just "produce a baby and keep your looks up and then you can have carte blanche to do anything you want--drugs, affairs, supporting another man on her husband's dime, tying her kid to the bed so she could go out, etc.

I'm actually quite surprised to see so much sympathy for her here. Yes, she had a horrible beginning, but golden opportunities fell into her lap--including divorce from Sam, with a huge payout--and she wasted it all.

reply

The sympathy is probably just recent due to the sjw phenomena. But Stone was gorgeous in this, was very good in her role, and despite being a bad mother and wife, she's shown to be a victim of Lester's. So given that and the sjw mindset, they can relate to her.

reply

Ginger was one of the worst characters in this movie and that's saying a lot. She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Utah! Get me two.

reply

I fell bad for her daughter. Yes I have known someone like her character.

reply

I'm happy to see this thread. I love this movie and something I've always pointed out to my friends who've watched it with me is this: she was a hooker. I get that. She was a hustler. Why didn't she think of Sam as her long-term, last client? Since that's how she rolls, why didn't she think of Sam as her "dream job?"

"We want the finest wines available to humanity. We want them here and we want them now."

reply

Do you think that if Sam Rothstein did NOT have her boyfriend pimp Lester Diamond beaten up then the relationship between him and her would have gone into a different, and better, direction?

reply

No.

Sam should have her and Lester killed and be done with it...

Yes -- that's when the marriage started to fall apart and when Ginger became an alkie and a junkie and a cheater (with Nick). Having Lester beaten to a pulp in front of her eyes was the dumbest thing Sam ever did (along with not re-hiring Don in some capacity).
