Was McMurrey in on the scam with Palmer?

I couldn't tell if he was crooked or just incompetent.

Incompetent, if he was in on the scam he would not of fumbled around at the beginning causing Max to get the gun.

Maybe both, he didn't go drive up the mountain after Mrs. Patterson told him where the kids were headed.

I vote in on it, otherwise he would've gone with the mom, or at least looked into what she told him. Him crashing into Palmer at the beginning and ruining Palmer's shot at Max was probably just him being a clumsy doofus.

However he could be innocent but just grossly incompetent enough not to realize his partner was corrupt and in on it with Bragdon. And a jerk, too, for not going with the mom.
