that's just one of those things they took from the character of the show and parodied for the movie. Like with the other characters from the show, they took certain qualities, like jan's jealousy, marcia's selfishness and blew it up to an extreme to make it funny. Which it definitely is..including mike's character

I think Mike was a '70s kind of guy into meditation and stuff like that.
