Ya, I liked it. It was pretty good.

I thought it was pretty cool once the band started. I loved the look on Davy Jones' face with the guitar riffs.
shareWhich just goes to show you that Davy Jones was a good actor in addition to being a musician, given that this film came out the same time as the Justus album, which features the Monkees recording music in the same style as the updated "Girl." Too bad it didn't make it onto the album, I mean Mike Nesmith was a total slacker and wrote some new lyrics for "Circle Sky," and made them put it on the album. It totally sucked, as the only good version was the live version of the song featured in The Monkees film Head. The Monkees could rock when they wanted to, and had no issues with dismantling/parodying their own image.
I also prefer the updated version of the song too. I also love the fact that Micky and Peter show up alongside Davy later on in the film. :)
I liked it, but was it a new song for the movie, or an old song covered in the movie?

It was featured on a Brady Bunch episode with Davy Jones starring. 'Girl' was a classic Davy Jones Schmaltz song. They lampooned that and Jan's wig in that part of the movie.
shareI always liked the original version of Girl a lot better than the rock.
Last movie in theaters: Monsters VS. Aliens (4/5)
Last movie on DVD: John Tucker Must Die (4/5)
Thank you for clearing this up. I was wondering who Davy Jones is (I am German, born 1963, and had no idea who that was when I watched the movie last night!)
I actually thought this would be a mockery of David Cassidy, and for some legal reasons they couldn't call him David Cassidy. So I thought they meant to show Cassidy and had to call him another name, Davy Jones.
Wow, so this Jones dude is a real musician, huh? Far out!
I have watched the original episodes on west german TV in 1972/73 when I was a child. I have no memory if there ever was an episode about some musician I didn't know anyway. So even if that episode had been shown in Germany, I have no memory at all of that.
I wished I could see the original episodes again. Oh wait - they must be on DVDs out, right? I am going to look on Blockbuster then. (I live in the USA now, so I have access to BB)
i absolutely LOVE the rock version of this song. this movie came on the other day and even though i was running late and needing to get out the door - i stayed behind just so i could see davey jones perform this song at the dance.
sharekaufmeisterin: Davy was a member of the 60s pop band, The Monkees. They had their own TV show, too. You might want to see if you can find some episodes of it on DVD--it's pretty hilarious.

It ROCKED DA HOUSE! And I thought it was so cool when Davy was clearly getting into it.
shareThe rock version was the first version I ever heard, heh.

It certainly was one of the highlights of the film.
There are few things as fetching as a bruised ego on a beautiful angel.
I love that song!! It was great!!
That guy came to us for help, and we lit him on fire!
Move, and I'll sock ya one!
kaufmeisterin - I find it hard to believe that you were born in 1963 and never heard of Davy Jones.
shareI was born in 82' and knew of him because my mom was a big fan of his music back in the day.
RIP Davy jones
I was born in '90 and knew him because my family own this on VHS and I would watch this with my Mom, who would talk about him sometimes because she was a fan of his and The Monkees when she was a kid.
The Rock version of the song Girl is my favorite part of the movie. I love the whole school dance scene.

Davy Jones passed away on February 29 2012 at the age of 66 from a severe heart attack due to atherosclerosis.
shareI also love the way the grunge band so willingly played along with it. Marcia had such authority!

I remember the original TV episode, guest-starring Davy Jones, VERY WELL and loved the revamped version of "Girl" in this film. I just wish they had given us an updated version of Bobby Brady's song from that same episode --- "I'm wild about you, Baby! Wild about you, Baby! Whoa, whoa, whoa!"
Remember what Peter said in response to Bobby's song?
