What was wrong in adding nipples?
Everyone involved even Bob Kane had a issue with it.
shareI've been asking and no one has given me an answer. A good one or bad.

It's officially 'too far'. If bat-nipples are ok, how about a little bat-scrotum, or bat-cameltoe. It's just too much. Besides, there were no bat-veins, and if anything, they could have gotten away with veins but nipples showing through a male costume are not an artistic element I recall ever seeing in the comic books.
Also, only the guys had bat-nipples. Bat-girl didn't and it might have been kinda hot there. So it comes across as some more of Schumachers gay agenda... Bat-butt, bat-nipples, George Clooney. Seems like Schumacher made his movies with a raging hard-on the entire time.
Also, the six-packs looked so ridiculously fake. The whole thing had a cheesiness that reminds me of spray on tan.
The same with me.

I guess they didn't need to be added and really it's probably just people picking on things for the sake of it. I myself never had a problem with them because if he has abs on the suit what's wrong with nipples also.
shareI hadn't thought of the abs, but you're right. Why have one without the other?

Having nipples and being anatomically correct made the suits look unusual, they were based on greek statues and superheroes are often drawn like painted semi naked people.
share1) It is campy in the sense that it serves no purpose other than aesthetic appeal.
2) If not the former, then consider how the costume is meant to intimidate criminals. If it has a Greek statuesqe look that can be seen as erotic or gay it will be laughable to criminals.
3) The only reason I bring up gay (not even b/c Joel is gay), is b/c of the whole comic censorship thing back in the day that had Batman and Robin labelled as gay. Do we really want to go there?
4) Why not chest hair too while where are at it? It should have a shadowy look that plays with the recesses of the mind b/c that is where Batman lives and will be seen. He shouldn't be in broad light where people can see minute details of his costume.

And it's a bit inappropriate to put them on since it was suppose to be a kid's film.
shareDon't be ridiculous.
shareThen why didn't Bat-girl have them? Only reason: nipples have a sexual connotation and Schumacher was ok with that on guys, but averse to it on women. Also the ratings board might have been a factor, but if you can't add them on both, it starts to come off like a sexualized male thing, and in that way I agree, it's inappropriate in a kids movie.
shareYou logic is literally twisted. If it WERE sexual in intent she would have had them too. The director clearly made the point he based the B and R suits in ancient statues of the male form and hence, the nipples. BG was a different thing altogether.
shareBatgirl did have nipples but had a bra on top, Schumacher thought it would sexist to leave her out by not giving her nipples.
The nipples were inspired by Greek statues with perfect bodies. Think everyone involved especially Bob Kane were bothered by them. If the film was suppose to be a kid's film why is there homoerotic undertones?
And it's "supposed".
share1. I never saw this movie as campy and wouldn't think of this as campy period.
2. If a crook gets aroused looking at the costume, that's THEIR kink. Since they would either be fighting Batman or running from him, I don't think they'd have time to notice nipples.
3. The Dynamic Duo have had gay rumors hurled their way for decades before the nippled suit. I'm not seeing this adding to them.
4. Some men can grow chest hair, some can't. Some shave it. Think of Batman as a "shaver". Again, with his constant movement, most people wouldn't be anle to take in that much detail.

They weren't very noticeable in BF so not a huge terrible error but they did mark a shift from trying to make Batman look intimidating to silly.
shareThe Schumacher batsuits really seemed to show off the male anatomy and it made Batman look rather gay when he didn't need to be. Batman was never about homosexuality.

Not being homophobic but people centered Schumacher's sexuality as the source of the film's problems like the nipples and codpieces.
shareTo be honest the nipples and the oversized codpieces were the very least of this films problems.

As to the codpieces: if I'm out fighting crime hand-to-hand, I'm going to protect the "Wayne family jewels" as best I can! I just thought of it as being like an athletic cup.

Maybe if Joel Schumacher's sexual preference weren't such an "open secret", we wouldn't be as cynical in regards to his intentions. It's kind of no different in contrast to say, the way somebody like Michael Bay objectifies women in his movies.
shareHis sexuel preference did ruin him people's minds and became used as a excuse for the poor quality of B&R.
shareSame with me. I saw this in the theater and never noticed them. Once they were pointed out to me they didn't bother me.
