saw a Japanese movie on IFC several years ago, think the title was killer #1 or something similar, but the premise is that Killer #2 is given an assignment he messes up and then Killer #1 is sent to find and kill him. Really enjoyed the movie, but can't remember the real title, thought this premise close enough, maybe someone can tell me if they know

No, it was an old movie, 60s I believe

It was "Branded to Kill" ("Koroshi no rakuin" in Japanese). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061882/

Awesome movie by Seijun Suzuki, he made a few others in the same vein you might enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions, but krokodil_gena got it right with "Branded to Kill". An excellent film worth purchasing cold, if you into surreal films.
