terrible movie, but I gotta know...

Why was Banderas' character unable to speak to the Costa Ricans when he clearly had a spanish accent? A casting/script collision or did I miss an attempt at humor?

I think that Banderases character understood perfectly but just wanted to have some fun.

It is a part of the movie, he first talks to them in english to poke fun, because he talks about putting lots of people in their graves, then he talks to them in spanish and the women are all pleasently surprised and offer him to give him the beer for free.

I think it was a little joke, since Banderas is Spanish and had only recently learned English. He did NOT know English when he did "Interview with a vampire".

His accent does not sound quite like a Mexican or Guatemalan accent.

He was just making fun of the ladies. All Spanish speaking people (whether from Spain or any country in Latin America)understand each other, regardless of accent. There are regionalisms that may interfere, but it's like an American speaking to a Brittish or Australian.

Actually it's really not a terrible movie. Watch anything by Uwe Boll and you realize this movie deserves more credit than it gets.

Some of you didn't pay much attention to the lines. :)

OK, so he starts talking to the ladies in English. He asks for "cerveza", which means "beer". The ladies offer "birra"...which is basically just another word for beer.

They chat a bit and they laugh and all...then he notices Electra.

Miguel instantly goes quiet for a sec. Then says: "Ave Maria Purisima" in perfect Spanish.

The women reply "Sin pecado concebida", the complement to that spanish prayer.

Surprised, they say "Hablando español?"....translation: "Speaking Spanish?"

Miguel replies "Perfectamente cariño"...which roughly translates to "Perfectly sweetie"

*End of relevant script*

Like another user said before, if you can speak Spanish, you can perfectly understand any other Spanish speaking individual, no matter the accent or region. And putting aside some cultural idioms, etc.

Hope that answers your question. :)

He was toying with them b/c that's his nature. He doesn't know how to relate to people other than to play games and threaten. But when he sensed "Jasmine", he got deadly serious and was no longer in the game-playing mood.

^^This. He was just playing with them, that's kinda how he was throughout the film but he changed his mood completely when he saw & smelled Electra/"Jasmine"
