Should have been great....but sadly, wasn't
I remember when I saw the trailer for this movie I was certain that it was going to be a smash hit. Stallone and Banderas going head-to-head. But sadly, this movie turned out to be a damp squib.
To start with, the whole tone of the movie was wrong. It was about two assassins so it should have been dark, gritty and edgy but instead it was too light in tone.
Banderas characterization was good. The crazy but dangerous new assassin who wants to desperately prove that he is the best at all cost. Stallone's character on the other hand was too "goody-two-shoes" for an assassin. He should have been more serious with shades of greys. Something like his character in "The Specialist", cold and calculative. Julianne Moore's character was completely wrong as well. Her relationship with Stallone should have been more like a mouse in a cat's grasp. She should have been in fear of the assassin, trying to escape any chance that she got. Instead she is depicted as an annoying brat with a cat and Stallone is like the tolerant parent.
The climax was pretty dull too. There should have been an intense showdown between Stallone and Banderas, each showcasing his skills.
"I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!"
