Slayers vs. Slayers Next

Till date I have still not seen "Slayers"- although I would have loved to- but I have seen "Slayers Next". It was funny, touching, full of imagination and enthusiasm. In short, "Slayers Next" was for me amazing, just simply amazing. Rarely did an anime surprise me in such a pleasent way.

And that's the problem. I don't know if this sequel series is actually better than the ( for me unknown ) original because I loved it.

Has anyone seen both series? Which one is better? Could it really be that "Slayers Next" are better?

And what's the difference betveen them?

reply

The entire Three seasons of slayers have been very good.

If you get the first slayers, you will not be disappointed. It has all the fun and great story development of the later two.

The first season is just as good as the second one. It will also explain a lot of stuff for you, since a lot of things such as the Giga Slave and Shabranigdo are revealed in the first season. And of course, lets not forget how all the slayers team people met up. You'll like it.

reply

Thanks for the reply, fannyot. I hope I will get to see all episodes of "Slayers" soon.

But many are saying that the last one, "Slayers try", was awful. Is that true? I hope not! The characters have grown on me!

------------

Anyway, can you tell me the funniest joke/scene from "Slayers"? I would just love to hear some of them!

reply

HEY! ^^
"Slayers" is the best anime that I've ever seen!
Wich one is better...??? I prefer to think that "Slayers" is not divided in 3 seasons, when I see Slayers, I only see SLAYERS!! That funny, and full of surprises serial, I don't mind if in front of me I have the simply called "The Slayers" or if it's the "Next" or "Try" season... They all, are only one. One that's incredible good in each part where you decide to look on. And one that's the greatest anime creation!!!!
I have the complete collection of Films, OVAs, and TV Episodes. And I really recommend you every second of every one of them.
Sorry about my english, it's very poor, but I hope you'll understand something of it.. ^^
GOOD LUCK!!

"Slayers" is the best anime you know of? Glad I'm not the only one who loves them ( even with my insuffiecent knowledge of all episodes ). Namely, I have been reading some of the reviews of this anime on the internet and there is a samll group of critics who claim that they like it, but that the story is just a normal comedy without any deeper meaning. That makes me MAD! You can't even enjoy one thing in your life without someone saying; "Oh, that's nothing special...There are better things in life than this."

If you want to, you can read my comment on "Slayers next" here on imdb.

Finally this thread has come to life. I see you are quite a fan Lina-Chan. So tell me, are "Slayers try" really worse than other seasons? Or are there just as good? And how many animes do you know of?

Anyway, can YOU tell me your favorite scene/joke from this anime?

My was in one episode in which Martina cast a spell on Lina to make her feel the pain she causes to others. When Amelia woke up Lina noticed that she was all in bruises and asked her who did that to her. Amelia said; "You! You were sleeping and kicking around in your dream all night! That's why I tied you up with a rope on your bed and untied you in the morning before you woke up!"

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

Then, sometimes later, Lina was feeling the pain of everyone she kicked but didn't know what's going on. Xellos decided to show her: he put Gourry's hand on her breasts. Lina kicked Gourry in the genitals. Gourry fell on the floor. But then Lina felt "that" pain (!)herself and fell on the floor too.

Ha, ha...that one is a keeper.

reply

Yeah, sometimes super-hardcore otakus tick me off. Anybody who does not think that slayers is a great anime series is, well, no need to be rude.

I thought the first episode was really funny when Gourry thought he was saving a princess, but it ended up being Lina. ha ha. poor lina.

And lets not forget the great King Gaav's reaction to Martina's constant harping about the monstorous zolmegeustar.

Hellooo!! sorry about the late answer... It's because I’m very busy with my studies… v_v AND it takes me a lot of patience and dedication to generate an English message, and I have to be really encouraged to start with this... ¬_¬U …haha! xD It's not like only understand it. ^^ Well now I’m doing it... =)

About the scene you say, ikuharakunihiko, I love it!!!!! xD It’s really funny, but it's not my favorite.
I hope that you at this time had saw the other seasons, because they have a lot of funny jokes like that one, each one of them are really funny (to me) and I really enjoy a lot whit every single one.

I like very much when Lina and Amelia get dressed in ridiculous robes, and they have to sing a “spell” that finally was only a festival song…. And Zel guiding them with all his expressions…. Hahaha!! I love them xD!!
And I like too, when they all get dressed like animals and other things, and they have to do a lot of crazy and funny tests in the Artemay tower... Aahh… but there are a LOT of jokes that I really enjoy!! ^-^

Well, that’s all for now…!! =P I’m going to sleep!!! xP
…and sorry again about my poor english… V_vU
Good luck!!

Chao! ^^

reply

Oh no, try is just as good as the rest of them. I have watched each season at least several times, and the same madcap comedy is in try as the other two. You will definitely like try.

***Most of the complaints about try are probably aimed at the fact that there is no selphie.

reply

So what was the best joke in "Try"? I'm really curious.

And you can be rude. Go ahead, call those people anway you want.

reply

ha ha.

But it actually has been a while since I saw try. I would probably say, just off the top of my head, when gourry was checking out filia's tail for the first time, and he got conked on the head pretty hard for percieved perversion.

reply

I'll probably end up being the most rude person here, as I'm actually criticizing the 3 series, not including the movies.

In my opinion, and in those who would seem to agree with my viewpoint on inverse.org boards, Slayers Next would be the best of the three seasons. Second would be Slayers Original, and last would be Slayers Try. To answer your question, I would say Slayers Original will not disappoint you if you enjoyed Next. But the poor animation, and the poor sound quality may bother you. The voices may sound a bit weird at first, but that's just the actors beginning to grasp their characters. You may also not get use to the other Zelgadis at first if you watch the dubbed version, but he's bearable, and soon good old Mr Crispin Freeman will take over.

Their seem to be more laughs, and actions in the first series compared to the other two series. The action scenes are intense and at times fun, and there's only a little bit of drama in the last few episode. That's all fine and dandy if you don't mind, but there should have been a little more character development and drama, like the way they did it in Next. But too much of that, and concentrated poorly in throw-away characters like they did in Try seemed to really fail.

My problem with Try is that they completely ignored developing the characters of the past in Gourry, Amelia and Zelgadis. They focused too much attention on Try characters, like Filia, Val-Gav and lesser villains like the Fox. They also took away Gourry's sword of light half way through, which killed his usefulness in the series. He's become the absolute male bimbo. The episodes also weren't as humorous as the series before it. Although, may be that's just me not enjoying Lina rebuilding the Dragon Shrine or their joyride on the train. I also didn't enjoy the 2 castles at war with each other, or Gourry becoming a hero, and, well lets say I didn't enjoy half the episodes in Try. Although I have to admit, the fighting and action were pretty good, though there wasn't much of it.

To conclude, I just want to say The Slayers collection seemed to be right on track, from the Original Series right thru Next. But halfway after Try, the Slayers for some reason fell apart.

For some reason I feel like I'll get flamed for this post, but that and more that I left out is how I feel about the show. I've watched nearly all the episodes from series to series, and movie to movie. The only episodes I'd missed was the introduction of Amelia in the first season. I'd tried to take a rational viewpoint in this post, so I hope any replies or flames will also include rational thinking, and not just, "if you have nothing good to say, don't say anthing at all" arguments. Although, I think I was rather lite on it.

reply

Why the heck do you think you will get flamed? You loved 2 out of 3 seasons, so I would have to praise you twice after I flame once.

But, the joke asaide. I didn't get to see Try yet but by going through the internet I think you are not the only one who is somewhat disappointed by Try. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it. And no, I don't mind the somewhat poor animation.

reply

I just wanted to say that out of all 3, I loved the first one the most. I also loved "Next" and I did like "Try". But the first one impressed me the most.

As far as particularly funny scenes or episodes, perhaps the funniest ones were episode 14-17 (Slayers Vol. 5). Although Zelgadis isn't even in those episodes, none of those episodes took themselves seriously, and I really appreciated that. The funniest one is 17, when Gourry is forced to dress as a female, and catches the eye of a particularly macho goofball of a male. I laughed pretty hard at that one, and still do whenever I watch it.

reply

I am not in the business of flaming anyone but I do have to voice my disagreement with the dislike of Slayers Try...

Although I will freely admit that Try isn't quite AS good as the first two seasons, I don't think it abandons character development of the previous characters at all (other that the complete dissapearance of Sylphiel in the 3rd series <granted I missed the last bit of Next so maybe there's a reason for that>) as it begins to actually delve a little bit deeper into the personal relationships of the characters as Lina and Gourry both get forced closer and closer together, and Amelia's feelings for Zelgadis start bubbling to the surface a bit more... in addition, it wasn't quite AS necessary in Try to rehash the characters previous stories as Try is the 3rd Season of the show and I would imagine that in the 3rd season of any show, if they kept going back over all the same old crap with the characters that people would say that it was just recycling old material which Try does a very good job of not doing...

In addition, adding Filia to the series (as an oddly romantic foil for Xellos of all people) was in my opinion a very amusing move and by far one of the best sources for comedic inspiration in the 3rd season...and seeing as how they added Filia and a new villain into the series it would make sense that the series focus a bit more on the stories of them and how the characters (who should be well known at this point) will react to them. Also, the series has undertones which explain alot of whats going on behind the scenes...the fact that Slayers Try finally hints at the connection of Amelia's family and Naga (both with her comment saying that she has a scary sister that's as tall as Gourry, and her reaction when at one point Lina starts laughing like Naga used to) To me it seemed like a very good way to begin branching the stories out even further into the newly expanded world of "The Slayers" and it seems almost too unfortunate to me that with all the groundwork laid in the series that a fourth season was never made (possibly introducing Lina's sister?)...

Anyway, while I respect your opinion, I personally enjoy Try greatly and what not...

reply

I did like "Try" quite a bit, especially the end cuz I'm a sucker for tearjerkers.

reply

My favorites out of the series would have to be "Next" as my first favorite, We get to meet Xellos, I'm a sucker for mysterious characters (He was also my first CosPlay costume), Then "Try" I just love the interaction between Xellos and Fillia, The way they tease and play off each other, Then finally the original, I didn't exactly like it least but it focused too much on Lina and Gourry for my taste. I enjoyed the episodes with Zel, Rezo, and Kopii most though.

reply

My friend loved Try Because of Xelloss, I loved try because of Valgaav

We had lots of fun laughing at each other when they were fighting XD

I first came across Slayers via Netflix when I rented Slayers Next. I was intrigued by that I rarely laughed out loud, or saw much depth in the series, but enjoyed it immensly nonetheless. I have since seen Try and then the first season. I have re-watched Next and saw a great deal that I missed. I would say the Next was the best season of the three, but that's just my opinion.

All the Slayers seasons were good. Slayers didn't seem all too sure of some of the characters and the direction they wanted to portray them, and their appearance changed a bit throughout, but still maintained an interesting story and fun characters. The English actor for Zelgadis does change about halfway through the season, but I liked the new voice of Zel.

For Next, they seemed to have the characters figured out and their look. It starts more solidly than the first season and maintains that integrety by introducing Xellos, a mysterious wise-ass who becomes one of the most beloved characters of Slayers.

Try, the third and final season of the series, took a much darker turn than the previous seasons. There weren't as many advances in characters as before, and when the story became "too dark," the creator added a few gag episodes to lighten the mood, however these severely detract from the pace of the series. I, generally being a fan of darker animes, enjoyed this season almost as much as Next. Filia, a dragon, being introduced as a quasi-romantic foil of Xellos, a monster and sworn enemy of dragons.

The Japanese acting was supurb with Megumi Hayashibara as Lina. And the English dub was excelent, Lisa Ortiz does a brilliant job as Lina, and all the other characters were likable. Some did have trouble with David Moo's Xellos, but it isn't a bad portrayal, just very different from Akira Ishida's Xellos.

The OVAs that take place before the series are good in their own right, but the English voice for Lina is different that the series(Lisa Ortiz for the series', Cynthia Martinez for the movies.) Naga the Serpant,(rumored older sister to Amelia) was an interesting character to say the least... Incredibly irritating, but then she's supposed to be that way.

Well, I finally got the chance to see "Slayers", the first season. To be honest, it was a little bit of a let down. Don't be angry, but here are some of my random thoughts:

*SPOILERS*

The first episode was rather amusing. Lina stealing gold and money from bandits and posing in stylish fashion was pretty good choice to start the show. True, Megumi Hayashibara's voice bugged me a little bit, but all in all it seemed how this could be hilarious. Unfortunately, it was ( at least for me ) never truly hilarious. Amusing, yeah, but never laugh out loud funny.

Lest's start with Gourry. He thought she was a little girl. Amusing, but nothing more. They soon got the chance to fight a dragon, and quite frankly I thought the whole thing was too childish. The dragon made grimaces and such stuff and it seemed as if it was taken from some Looney tunes show.

Then the real plot started - they had to fight priest Rezo who wanted to awake a legendary demon. The problem - well, he wanted to do it just to gain his sight. Namely, he is blind. The thing is that he was actually good, but turned evil because he wanted to see, and the story has a hard time trying to sell us the fact that Lina and company and completely innocent while fighting him. Actually, some will feel sorry for Rezo. True, the demon could destroy the world, but it still seems as if both Lina and Rezo are mixed charachters, both good and evil.

Zelgadis' entrance was incredibly cute. At first he was Rezo's servant who captured Lina and put her in a dungeoun. But then he changed his mind and freed Lina ( who asked him :"Are you doing this because you're in love with me?" ). Their whole "hiding in the woods" thing was nice and had some cute ideas ( after a long duel one bad guy attacks Zelgadis with his sword. But the sword just breaks because Zelgadis is made of stone ). Also, ironically, after some 10 episodes Lina already managed to beat ( =kill ) Rezo, which was pretty unexpected considering probably everyone was thinking it's going to take her the whole show.

Then the plot took a break and went into some one part episodes. Amelia had her entrance. Some of the good episodes were when Lina decided to help some ugly guy and pretend to marry him so that his gold wouldn't be inherited by a witch with 10 daughters. Also cute: when Amelia, Gourry and Lina went to starr as actors in a play which spreads propaganda about how evil Lina is. The episode with a gay dragon was surprisingly weak and lame. Yeah, Gourry dressed a girl with 2 long ponytails ( a hommage to Sailor Moon? ) to avoid being unnoticed in one town, but his fight with the dragon was avarage. The dragon was wearing make up and kiddnaping men from ships, so Gourry stabed him with a sword.

After those very good "filler" episodes, the plot returned to Rezo. It seems he is dead, but his clone isn't. And his clone want's to cause a lot of trouble. The final battle was brilliantly executed ( Gourry's scream when Lina was hit by Rezo's ray and started bleeding was intense and dramatic ) and refreshingly dark but after it was over I couldn't feel that something was missing.

They beat him, all is fine, they eat, laugh, the end. It felt as if some better conclusion would have done wonders. All in all, "Slayers" is a very good anime, amusing and cute, but too silly and not really funny. "Slayers Next" was, at least in my opinion, much better. I gave Next 10 out of 10 at first, but later on changed it to 8 out of 10. Season 1 gets a 7 out of 10.

Grade: 7/10

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

I mainly liked Rezo as a character. I did like the fact that even though Shabranigdo was defeated in the first few episodes, that event casted a long shadow over the rest of the series.

But I watched the series pretty much from first to third, so I did not notice whether the first one was a let down compared to the other two.

But then again, I am mainly a slayers season two fan becuase of King Gaav. His character was a bit more complicated than the usual bad guy, considering the fact that he rebelled from the monster race. It lends credibility to his statement of accusing a zealot like Amelia of being a hypocrite.

reply

slayers: next is clearly the superior series out of all 3, however without the lead in of the first season it loses the impact of the ending. slayers: try sucks

reply

I like the first season the best because it was more memorable for me.

Slayers Next was also great and had more tender moments.

Slayers Try was the least entertaining of the 3.

reply

In fact, Try isn't worse than Next and original-it's different, that's all.

reply

I really didn't care for TRY. It felt... off. Forgive the bad pun, but it really tried too hard. The story didn't seem to suit the characters.

NEXT was the best, and season 1 is fun, despite the weak animation.
