Least favorite character of the show
I have to say Gail Emory I just found her annoying
shareI hated the way lovely Jake Weber was replaced with a charisma-free plank.
You can't sell horse tranquilisers to a midget!
Billy was hot, but I did like Matt better.
share1. Merlyn: It's like she knows what is going on but disappears whenever its time to say anything of substance.
2. Caleb: Ugh, that accent!
3. Selena: That exaggerated southern belle thing she had going was somewhat irritating.
4. Ben: What a pussy!
I don't like Matt, the good doctor, very much. It's probably because I don't like this type of character.

I didn't like Gail. She hates Lucas, but then for seemingly no reason she's massively attracted to him. Wasn't that great an actor either.

Although I loved the show, I never really liked Gail either. But for 'least favourite' I'd have to vote Billy... that was the guy that 'replaced' Dr Matt, right? Probably the biggest mistake they made on the show (short of not airing the eps in order in the US, or so I heard... how the heck did that make any sense?!). I once hear that they got rid of Jake Weber because they wanted someone 'sexy' to play against Gary?! I'm a straight guy, so I don't know... but I'd have thought he was at least far more likeable and charismatic than the dullard they replaced his character with! Dr Matt was a great foil for Buck, and losing him really cost the show, IMO... it went from a struggle between good and evil to me just siding with the bad guy because the good guys sucked so much! :)
Selena?! Boy, I had *such* a crush... *blush*
As enjoyable as the show was, all the characters really annoyed me (especially Caleb). I'd say Matt was probably the closest to a tolerable character, but that's not saying much
They had their moments, though.

I am not sure there can be a "least favorite" character. I think they all had their roles and they all played them pretty well. It was a low budget TV series in the mid '90s ... and I think it almost had a sci fi quality and I mean that in the best way.
Hell, by the 3rd or 4th season it may have been a legit sci fi series - kind of like the Prestige was Sci Fi behind the magicians cloak. Maybe Arthur C Clarke had it right.

I normally hate kinds in shows or movies, but this one was OK. I think he acted fine, maybe even very well, until the end, but then he had to act out, didnt he?
And the #1 officer was kind of an odd push over, but then he did stand his ground at times and he did do the right thing when no one else had a clue. In some ways the deputy Ben Healy was a better sherif than the sherif.
I hated Selena and how much of a slut she is. Not very good role model for her school kids. Add onto that billy who just walks into town and falls for the town tramp. Also on I understand why people hated how annoying Gail was, but I saw her more weak then annoying and also the reason why she hated Lucas, but feel for him was plan as day. He had power to control people. At time I hated Lucas cause I've known guys like that, but anyone could relate to that.
shareMy least favourite character was Gail, she was so pious and worthy (the scene where she is kneeling by her parents grave was cringe worthy)!
However, the knowledge that Dr Matt was replaced by pseudo macho Dr Billy because TPTB thought he was sexier, has by-passed any negative thoughts about her.
Jake Weber was an excellent foil for Lucas. He was calm and intellectual and could and did hold his own in any of their many spats. The chemistry between them was brilliant. The replacement was just a run of the mill character with little or no charisma. Jake was also very sexy in a nerdy, tortured soul kind of way.
I always wondered what happened to him but just thought it was part of the story line. The thought that he had been effectively sacked half way through due to some idiot thinking he wasn't cutting the mustard, is very annoying.
I also liked Ben, he was like a true innocent in a sea of vipers. I also felt that he was one of the very few people Lucas actually had any real affection for.
I loved the series when it came out, but here in the UK, like in the US, the episodes were messed up. I got the feeling somebody, somewhere just didn't want it to be a success.
Gail was my least favourite character too. She hates Lucas at the beginning only to fall in love with him even though she knew Lucas had raped Caleb's mother (her aunt).
Floyd was another character I didn't like. At least Ben stood up to Lucas a couple of times (most notably in the pilot episode and Echo of Your Last Goodbye). But Floyd was a wimp.
Someone's at the door
Yes, Floyd was a real 'yes' man. Didn't bring much to the show other than to show how influential and egotistical Lucas was.
As I remember, in one of the unshown episodes, I am sure Lucas blackmails Gail into having sex with him, yet she still fell in love with him. Maybe it was indicative of just how powerful he was.
Such a shame there wasn't another series. Considering some of the rubbish shown these days, with little to no storylines, it was something pretty special in my opinion.
That new doctor that replaced the original midway through Season 1. The original doctor had tremendous chemistry with Gary Cole and was a worthy adversary to Sheriff Buck. The new doc? Not so much!

Although I've LOVED the actress Sarah Paulson on American Horror Story, if I HAD to pick a least fave character on AG, Merlyn would be it.
And...I see I am the only one that absolutely LOVED Billy. I really enjoyed his chemistry with our "town tramp" Selena. It was unfortunate that Matt was written out.
What a wonderful, wonderful show AG was!
