new nightmare destroyed Freddy Kruger

I love the nightmare movies but i feel like new nightmare Destroyed Freddy by bringing him real world instead of leaving him in the dream world which is what makes him scary in the first place. The fact that its a movie about making a nightmare movie is also kind of a cheap cop out. It totally takes you out of the world where Freddy exists and asks you to suspend disbelief while simultaneously showing you the man behind the curtain so to speak then asking you to forget what they've shown you which just doesn't work in my opinion. Freddy is scary because he lives in your subconscious dreams, when you bring him real world he becomes just like any other monster. Freddy doesn't belong in the real world, when you think about it , it actually doesn't make sense to have him exist outside of the world created in the other nightmare films. the script for this movie was shoddy at best and the effects where awful. It could have been a really interesting movie, but the fact the we get to see behind the scenes of filming was the downfall. freddy was dead, they should have left him that way or at least waited for a better scripted to bring him back.

don't dream it, BE it! - rocky horror picture show

I don't like the New Nightmare, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it destroyed the character. If NN had come earlier and/or had spun off a bunch of sequels that kept in vein of its direction, then I would agree. But one movie at basically the tail end of the series doesn't do too much damage.

Freddies revenge did this first.

New nightmare did the opposite of destroying Freddy. It reinvigorated him. NN is the best sequel of the series, much darker and scarier than the other sub-par entries.

New Nightmare is my second favorite in the series after the original. The sequels are a lot better compared to what happened with Hellraiser, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw and most other horror series. I'm still not a huge fan of 2-6 but all those movies have some entertainment value. Freddy VS Jason is a good one time watch but not a lot of replay value. The remake is garbage and I guess we could say that destroyed Freddy in some ways.

Staying focused on the original series. The late 80's it jumped the shark. Freddy doing rap videos, Freddy TV show and he just got to clownish. New Nightmare had its flaws but it made Freddy respectable and scary again. That movie really had some creepy scenes, brutal deaths, great send off for Heather/Nancy because I hated her death in part 3 and I loved Freddy's new look. I just watched New Nightmare for the first time in over 5 years and I think it gets better with age. 8/10 for me

Considering that the evil in this movie isn't actually Freddy Krueger, the movie couldn't have destroyed the character. I don't see NN as a sequel to the ANOES-franchise, it's more of a standalone thing that uses its actors and characters. And I feel that it was beautifully handled. You don't really have to love the franchise to enjoy this movie, so I think that Wes Craven achieved something outstanding with this.

But of course everybody is free to disagree with me.

^Agreed. New Nightmare isn't so much a Nightmare on Elm Street movie as it is a movie *about* A Nightmare on Elm Street. And that said, I think it succeeds.
