This made Freddy scary again.
The character was darker, more sinister, scary as all hell...nothing beats the first reveal of him in the film. Still makes me jump at least 10 feet out of my chair.

I like 1. But I think of it like “The Thing” -- creepy effects, not actually scary. Scary movies to me are, for example in recent years, Lights Out and It Follows.

I completely agree. That's why I love this one so much.
My favorites have always been the original, 3 and this one. I had thought for years Wes Craven made all the Nightmare movies. It wasn't until I watched Never Sleep Again that I found out he didn't and only did my favorites.
