Killing himself so that his younger self would be set up?

I don't think that someone so vain and power hungry would kill himself.

He wouldn't merge with his younger self.

Seems non logical.

I think the idea was that the younger Walker would also get caught in the explosion. Therefore the events never happen and his original plans are back on track.
