It's ok but what a wasted oppertunity!

Watching this again and I have to admit, it's a reasonably enjoyable way to kill some time but let's be honest, it's really nothing more than an extended TNG episode. Almost identical production values, sets, costumes etc and didn't really feel like a film at all.

I did like the story and all that jazz about destroying stars but even an uneducated moron like me has more respect for physics than this film has. 11 seconds? Add to that Malcolm McDowell just isn't an interesting bad guy a all and it is like bit of a wet sock.

Really though, more should have been made of the Kirk/old crew bit instead of just a few scenes and that was absolutely no way for him to go.

Kirks death should have been him suicide ramming the enterprise into Kronos while *beep* the Kilngon high commanders half dead wife and giving a proper snyde remark at the moment of impact, not a cheesy dying scene on some rocky planet in the middle of nowhere.

Still, for what it's worth it's a decent adventure but it could have been splendidly epic!

A lot has been documented on this. The writers weren't keen to write more for TOS crew and the TOS cast didn't really want to do what amounted as a cameo.

It's a somewhat interesting concept that is full of holes in implementation. Not much makes sense.
