I think it would have made more sense if carol was the one in the nexus instead of Antonia since she was the one I think Kirk regretted not being able to have a life with. Even though she does appear in the novel.

Carol was the originally intended character, not that it mattered. That whole sequence made no sense.
For what it's worth I agree. David should have been in there too.

Yup. In the novel (obviously written before the script was finalized), Kirk had saved everyone who had ever died under his command, and was about to marry Carol with David as best man. Might have been tough to pull off as Merritt Butrick had died 5 years earlier.
