Why did they kill Kirk?

What was the reasoning for killing off Kirk in this movie? Did Shatner want out of the franchise? Or did the producers plan to resurrect him in a future film, like Spock coming back to life in Star Trek III?

reply

Shatner didn't want out of the role but I doubt he thought he'd ever reprise it again. The writers actually thought it would be a great idea. They thought it would get more butts in the seats and would allow Picard to say "I'm all you've got now!" to the audience.

Jez it's been 20 years and I can still smell the stink on this movie. This was the beginning of the death of Star Trek right here.

Originally, the idea was to include both crews in the movie, covering both time periods. But a good enough story could not be developed (I think I could come up with one in my sleep).

Then they decided to bring back the big 3, but Nimoy and Kelley weren't interested in a smaller role, so they literally wrote Scotty and Chekov into the Spock and McCoy roles (which is why Chekov is in sickbay and Scotty takes the helm).

Shatner was told either he could agree to die or not be in the movie. The writers didn't want to leave Kirk in the 24th century, but obviously that decision showed arrogance on their part.

In any case, Kirk deserved a much better death.

Clever signature line, bro.

it was Paramount who wanted to kill him off, they told the writers to do it. it was like a parameter of the script. the dvd commentary didn't go in to why exactly the studio wanted him killed off though

No Shatner didn't like the idea he even tried to convince the producers to keep Kirk alive but it was either that or get out of this movie so he choose to go along with it.

It's just one of those evil Hollywood moments when the producers and story writers want a character to be kill-off so badly they even had to film it twice because people hated every minute of it.

Kirk's death in Generations is still considered one of the worst written hero death in Hollywood history it was forced and without any meaning.

reply

Without any meaning?? He helped save over 230 million lives, plus, unknowingly, the crew of the Enterprise D. I think it was a very fitting death. He died a hero.

reply

did you even read my comment I was talking about how they wrote an unworthy death scenario for Kirk. Even a kid could have done better but who cares anyways.

reply

It was worse the first time they wrote it (Soran shooting Kirk in the back). But still meaningless in the end.

Because it was in the script

Because George Takei wrote the script.

Speaking of which:
https://www.quora.com/What-could-be-the-reason-why-Captain-Kirk-said-oh-my-as-his-last-words/answer/Jon-Mixon-1

Despite what you see in films and read about in biographies, most people either don't have any “last words”, or they don't have the lengthy and pithy comments which are a staple of films - Most people ramble, speak unintelligibly, or say nothing at all at the time of their death. So when James T. Kirk said a simple “Oh my", that was actually closer to real life than anything else.

Star Trek: Generations really wasn't a good film - The decision not make it strictly a Next Generation project was a questionable one, it's dialogue was subpar; and it's a pretty dull affair. Frankly there's very little to recommend about it, making Captain Kirk's final line just another disappointment on a lengthy list of them

So it was a realistic line in what was otherwise a terrible film.

LOL

It was a bad way to kill off Kirk and on top of that, he was buried under some rocks on a planet in the middle of nowhere. He should have at least been given a proper Starfleet funeral and service.

reply

Fear not. There are books written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, with Shatners name on the cover and comprising what is known as the Shatnerverse. I never got through the first one but, 24th century technology with a dollop of alien 24th century technology lead to out heroic captain being up and around in no time. Romulans were involved as I recall.

i wish he was alive and we had ST: Kirk instead of ST: Picard.

Shatner is in better shape

Every actor loves a good death scene, and Shat is no exception. I'm sure that was a condition for doing Generations. Unfortunately, other than The Motion Picture, Shatner was a caricature of himself. He played every movie after TMP like camp.

reply

No.

reply

What. He was not campy in TWOK AND TSFS....the real silly shit didnt start until the Voyage Home. Which is probably the second worst TOS film after the Final frontier...

reply

Indeed.
