The TV reporters at the beginning were very "un-Trek"

One thing that slightly ruined this film for me were the news reporters at the beginning. One thing Star Trek has managed to do well throughout all seasons is avoid any kind of news coverage, reporters, or the like. I'm not sure why exactly, but leaving that kind of thing out gives the whole show a unique feel and leaves more to the imagination. Basically, we don't know how people get their news in the future - it's an unanswered question that doesn't need answering. As such, I think that including the reporters at the beginning of this film was a very odd decision.

I hated the reporters swarming all over Kirk, Scotty, Chekov.

I think it was just meant to be a reflection of today. Or 1994 rather. Or today.

It's Star Trek. Be all and end all.

So much more amusing than had it been hovering journalist robots with cameras and mics and zero personality. Nice to think that in the far future, people will still be digging for stories.
