If Sam Raimi gets his SHADOW made...

...I hope Universal will dust this title off and re-release a better version on DVD.

As many are aware, Sam Raimi (the director of the Spider-Man movies) is putting together his own version of THE SHADOW (whether he will direct is still up in the air).

However, I hope Universal will take advantage of the situation and put out a better edition of their SHADOW on DVD. Right now, it is a pan and scan version with no real extras.

I haven't bought it yet because their is nothing about it to compel me to buy it. I still am watching my VHS copy which is basically what the DVD is.

My ideal hope is to have a Director's Cut of the movie, if such a thing exists. I have read of a number of deleted scenes that got cut. One that really caught my attention came during the hall of mirrors scene where Khan is taunting the Shadow by showing him scenes from Cranston's life in some of the mirrors, him as a young boy and as Ying Ko that highlight some of his darker impulses.

The stuff of him as a boy is connected to another cut scene where Lamont is telling Margo how he almost killed his cousin when they were boys for telling on him about something. I think this was to show how Lamont's darker side made him powerful.

Another comes toward the end when Margo and her father are coming out of the hotel and are being questioned by Jonathan Winter's character about whether the Shadow was involved in all of this.

One scene involved a back and forth between Margo and Lamont to show how connected they were through their minds. It apparently showed Lamont laying in bed trying to read a book while trying to fall alsleep and it would show Margo doing the same thing. They had this series of stuff they went through with the other copying it.

There were some other small scenes that were cut.

I would like to see most of those cut back into the movie, or at the very least, have them in a deleted scene section.

If a Director's Cut is not in the cards, I want the movie released in widescreen if nothing else.

I would also like to see interviews/commentaries by Director Russell Mulcahy and screenplay writer David Koepp. I would love to hear what Mulcahy has to say about this film and what he had to do to get it released on time. I have heard stories that an earthquake destroyed a big section of the hall of mirrors set and they couldn't get the money to replace them so the whole sequence had to be cut down as it was originally going to be longer and more involved. I would love to hear about some of that.

Koepp really adhered a lot to the Shadow mythos in his script. I would love to hear what he has to say about the end result. In these kind of movies, it is traditional for the bad guy to die. I would love to hear how they came up with the villian's end that was used, because it was inspired.

Interviews, whether new or old, with Baldwin, Miller or Lone would be great. I can think of an old interview where Baldwin was praising Lone and how no one was going to see himself in this movie because Lone created such a striking character, much like Sean Connery did in "The Hunt For Red October."

I know there are some old interviews with Winters and Boyle from somewhere that could be used.

I would also like to see them fill out any new release with trailers, tv spots, marketing posters and Taylor Dane's music video for "Original Sin."

Come on Universal, give us a better release for "The Shadow" whether Raimi gets his version made or not.

Well the DVD version looks a hell of a lot better than the VHS. Other than that it's exactly the same. ;)

Watching The Shadow on Showtime HD was awesome exactly the fact that the film was cropped to make it a widescreen version. I definitely hope Universal has a HDDVD and BluRay version (specifically HDDVD as I own that). Considering that this new movie is made by Sony I might have to buy a BluRay player to own the HD version when it comes out. :(

You've got a lot lined up for this idea.

I'm satisfied with what I got for the Shadow. I would most certainly ENJOY extra features. But I'm satisfied with just the movie.

Personally, I'm more worried about Raimi's new version than a re-release. The '94 release was fantastic, in my opinion. Perhaps it was released at the wrong time, causing it to bomb at the box office. But I personally believe it managed to achieve the same feel as the radio show and the pulp comic. It embodied these elements and put them into movie form.

...this is the New Millenium. I'm scared that special effects and flash will be prioritized over the pulp and noir that the Shadow requires.

But here's hoping for the best.

omega - I would actually hate to see the movie be filmed with greenscreen 100% of the time. The new The Spirit film is going that route and I simply don't like it. If you're going to make a film CGI backdrops just make the characters CGI as well.

smurphy - The 1994 shadow film wasn't shot in widescreen. This was meant to give it that old film look, which was extremely dumb in my opinion so yeah I'm glad this movie failed for many reasons. If you watch the HD version which was recently shown on MAX or some random movie channel you'll notice that they transfered the 4:3 version to make it 16:9. They basically zoomed into the film to make it widescreen. It was definitely pretty to see it in HD but pathetic that the film itself had to be cropped.

You're confused about the open matte process. Many movies are filmed in open matte which then is cropped to the intended aspect ratio of the director. The Shadow was filmed for 1.85 widescreen. And although compared to the 1.33 DVD the HDTV airing cropped some image vertically that's because 1.33 full frame allowed for showing more of the vertical image from the open matte but cropped the horizontal image. The HDTV airing showed more of the horizontal image but less of the vertical image(cropping the vertical image is necessary when framing for a widescreen aspect ratio). The HDTV airing still isn't the original aspect ratio though because it's 1.78 AR instead of 1.85 which means it shows more of the open matte's vertical image than 1.85 but it is closer to OAR than the full frame DVD.

Here is a screenshot from the HDTV airing. http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/900/6839a22e30272a65fe3f8afix1.png

Exactly. The first two Spider-man's were pretty good while the last sucked, but honestly the whole franchise turned into a comic book on soap opera drama. THAT is what worries me with him directing any other comic book adaptation that doesn't have the seriousness he uses in his films. Maybe he could do something like Spawn (which is technically right up his alley), but stuff like The Shadow or comic books will be turned into something NONE of the fans want to see see. I mean it's like his whole "I didn't want Venom in SM3 because it isn't realistic" bull****. Wtf is that? Having inhuman abilities of a spider is realitistic enough? No, this guy would ruin it as much as I love a lot of his movies.

seriously, this movie was one big missed opportunity. The Shadow was such a great radio character, and i had great hopes for the film version.

while the film has a fairly nifty look and period detail, the actual script, writing, and action was all basically crap. when they give you a text crawl ten minutes into the film to explain what's going on... well, that's never a good sign.

i count this as a fairly near miss... though all the nonsense with the bad guy probably WAS screwed up by an earthquake, because it sure it is fragmented and nonsensical. And when it goes into the Howard Chaykin influenced look... well, that's just proof that they weren't really looking to the original as much as they should have.

i still think there is a good movie somewhere in there somewhere... but relying on a cgi dagger and a climax that happens without any real motivation or characterization... well, it sure could have been a lot better.

you people who "love" this movie should get out more, cause this thing really ain't much. such a great character, reduced to crap. sad.

No, widescreen is so much better than fullscreen/pan-and-scan. Widescreen shows the whole picture. Do I need to give the whole lecture. Maybe you meant widescreen. The version that's out right now, the one that everybody complains about, is in fullscreen.

Fortunately I still have my old Laser Disc of this movie in Widescreen. Too bad not 5.1

Wow! I had no idea that it was filmed in the 4:3 format. That is so stupid! I thought that by 1994, theatrical films just didn't do that anymore.

reply

Films are always shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio. It's called open matte.

The film is later framed how the director wants it.
