Why didn't Gail try to get the gun?

During the camping scene where Tom makes a break to try and get the gun from sleeping Terry. Gail's all upset and says that if Tom was caught, they'd almost definitely shoot him as he's expendable.

Why didn't Gail try instead? Wade and Terry wouldn't dare shoot her.

No, but Gail could be taught a fatal lesson if she did. Wade could kill Tom anyway.

Plot device, plus screen-writers who don't know much about firearms as tools. Same reason innocent movie city-slickers are never armed. You have to show the protagonists as victims--- If they just shoot the bad guy, the movie is over. Note we are supposed to be "shocked, shocked" when Wade pulls out a handgun, which a lot of law-abiding people pack in wilderness areas.
