The song is actually not really Irish in origin, but rather more likely Scottish. (There is evidence that the song was published in Ireland at least in the 18th century, but there is little evidence before 1700, suggesting Scots brought the tune to Ireland during the Ulster Plantations and Ireland came up with her own variations later.) The melody certainly has traces of a Celtic flavor (compare old sean nos love songs if you don't believe me) but the oldest known lyrics are written in Lowland Scots, with the title O Waly Waly (Roughly means "Oh woe is me."
