Song played throughout the movie

Does anyone know the name of the background music being played in the last scene when Gail and Tom are kissing? It's so familiar. I have heard it in other movies. Is it a hymn? It was also played when they passed the one camp. THanks

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but if the theme you're talking about is the same as or a variation of the one in the opening of the movie, the song is called "The Water is Wide." It's an old Irish folk song.

Yep, that's it! Thanks. Here is a great link to the song. http://www.ireland-information.com/irishmusic/thewateriswide.shtml

it's most often identified with a 1970s hymn, "When The Hart Pants." Most hymns used pre-existing music.

I learned a song with this tune in my church choir, called "The Gift of Love." The lyrics are from 1972, and it lists "traditional English melody" for the music.

The song is actually not really Irish in origin, but rather more likely Scottish. (There is evidence that the song was published in Ireland at least in the 18th century, but there is little evidence before 1700, suggesting Scots brought the tune to Ireland during the Ulster Plantations and Ireland came up with her own variations later.) The melody certainly has traces of a Celtic flavor (compare old sean nos love songs if you don't believe me) but the oldest known lyrics are written in Lowland Scots, with the title O Waly Waly (Roughly means "Oh woe is me."

The tune is also used for the hymn, 'When I survery the wondrous cross.'

I first heard this melody in the song "Must I go Bound" sung by the rather famous sixties singer Buffy Sainte-Marie. For the words, go to http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=73011 and search for "heard Buffy". This is on the record described at http://frisiansotherfavorites.blogspot.com/2008/06/buffy-sainte-marie-many-mile-1965.html .

But what's really interesting is under Crazy Credits for this movie, the dog is named Buffy.

The melody is also used in a hymn titled "As The Deer Longs." The only line I can remember is: As the deer longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for Thee, O Lord.

the same melody is also found in Pistol Packing Mama and Kung Fu Fighting
