I missed the first 10-15 minutes of this movie and I don't understand why Gail, Tom & Roarke were using sign language. Was someone in their family deaf?

Just the father was deaf.

Yup, it was clear that just her father was deaf and she said later on in the movie that her occupation was teaching at a school for the deaf.
