The Missouri River flows through nine states, rivers are long.

The opening scene is shot in Boston, MA. The family is "from" Boston.

I believe that some of the portions of the film shot in Oregon used the Rogue River. It is in Southern Oregon and is a beautiful area.

I was sure this was filmed in Canada, on the Elbow and Bow River in Alberta,, near Calgary. These rivers are used in a lot of films, Kevin Costner has filmed out here a lot, its where Clint Eastwood filmed "Unforgiven".
