First of all, I love this movie and I've seen it many times. But on my most recent viewing I was wondering something...

David Strathairn got to the end of the gauntlet on foot way faster than they did on the raft. If it was so quick and easy for Strathairn to get from just past Bridal Creek to the end of the gauntlet on land, completely bypassing the treacherous waters, why wouldn't Wade and Terry just take the green bag of money and do the same thing? It seems it would've been much easier, faster, and safer for them to just walk the rest of the way and avoid the danger.

In order to bypass the gauntlet on foot, one needed to climb an enormous rock wall without climbing equipment. Wade couldn't have done it while carrying the green bag. Terry couldn't have done it at all.

I saw this movie ages ago, and spent the whole time thinking "What the hell kind of setup is this? It's ridiculous to think that there's be a safe place downriver, that could only be reached by the river! Why not drive, or hike, and why is the far end of the rapids so safe, anyway? Etc."

Clearly nobody on the writing team gave a rat's about the plot or thought the audience would care about plausibility, they were just trying to set up a lot of action sequences.
