Van Doren and Stempel are both dead now. Almost a year to the day from one another.

Charles Van Doren April 9th 2019. Herbie Stempel April 7th 2020. Both aged 93.

A fairly odd coincidence.

I wonder if John Turturro met Stempel. If so Herbie should have hit him for depicting him as such a dork. I mean I'm sure he was one, but to be depicted as one is a whole other thing!

They actually did meet, and Turturro said he’d understand if Stempel punched him in the face.
