When Goodwin first meets Stemple at his apartment in Queens, they walk into the living room and for a split second we see Stemple's wife getting high I believe. It looks likes she is inhaling something. I am aware of American housewives getting high off simple household drugs that were around back in the 50's. Is this what Redford was trying to show? By the 60's most or all of those drugs were illegal or prescription only. A very odd scene indeed as we hear Stemple's son banging the drums upstairs.

I believe she was applying eye drops. Not everything is about drugs, you know.

i figured that she was smoking in her undercrackers and that she bolted up because she was embarressed as someone had walked into the house while she wasnt properly dressed. but the eye drops i didnt see didnt think it was weird though

sorry its an english slang for under wear, dont ask me how it came about cos Ive no idea. but what I meant was that she was in a state of undress so she was a little shocked....ah you know what posted it a while ago and havent seen the movie in a while so forgot my original intention LOL.

When we first see Mrs. Stempel, she's nursing a cold, looking at a thermometer. She might be prone to sinus problems.
