I understand his cameo appearances in his own movies, but how/why did he appear in another directors movie? Btw, he was pretty good!

Why not? He can't do that? Maybe he was asked by Robert Redford and he agreed to do it. By the way, Redford beat him out for the Best Director Oscar in 1980! And the only time I've seen him in a cameo in his own films is in Taxi Driver as a Passenger. This was when he had his facial hair.
