Well this movie is not as unique as I'd hoped after hearing much praise for it. It is very good the way its adapted here, but sadly. This story has already been done, and well I kinda liked the one in 1991 better. But that could just be because the other is American made. The movie is Final Approach.

See it for yourself. I can't see how Final Approach didn't very much influence the making of A Pure Formality. Unless the release dates are wrong. The concept and how the story is told is exactly the same. There's a slightly different bait n switch tactic, but not too different. This one too has incredible diaglogue thats very poetic in parts and afterword you will reflect on all the little moments falling into perfect place. Final Approach uses even more subliminal imagery for subtle ques. I especially love the painting entitled Heaven & Hell.

First of all, if one is looking for the original sources of any story idea, he/she should look in literature and not movies.

Thank you for alerting me to Final Approach. As to influences, I have great doubts that Tornatore was at all influenced. When I interviewed him by telephone some years ago he gave a completely authentic account of how he came to construct A Pure Formality. I would suggest that it is an idea that was in the air and in these two instances, dealt with in very different ways

I'd love to see your interview with Tornatore about this film, where can I find it? I'm fascinated by his motivation for making it.
