How did all of those people know Vada's mom was dead?

Ok so I'm not even sure if they tell you in the movie how Maggie and Harry met but how did all of her old friends know she died? And how did some of them know that she had a daughter? I assume Harry and Maggie lived in Pennsylvania the entire time they were together. I guess Vada's mom and her friends could have talked on the phone but Vada's dad didn't seem to know about any of Maggie's friends. The crazy woman Hilary knew that Maggie had died but she had no idea she had gotten remarried and had a daughter? And then that guy Jeffery knew she died and had a daughter. I know it's a movie but its just kind of weird.

Possibly they are friends with some people that went to Maggie's funeral and word traveled that way

Maybe Maggie wrote to her some of her old friends to let them know she was married and expecting a baby. But I have no idea how they knew she died...

I think the deal was:
Hillary Mitchell had lost touch with Jeffrey Pomeroy and Maggie Muldivan. She probably knew them when they were married, and that was about the last she'd heard from either of them.. and then probably heard through the grapevine about Maggie's death and her baby across the country. And when she met Vada, she just assumed Jeffrey was her father... hence the big slip in conversation and Vada getting all upset.

reply

They would have heard through the grapevine. Like, her ex husband was in the theatre with her, so he was still in touch with her when she met Harry, because he said this when Vada was in his house (when she thought he was her dad)

As for Hillary, she would have heard that Maggie was dead, but I didnt think she knew that Maggie had a daughter, I got the feeling that she just picked up on the fact that Vada was her daughter because she looked just like her mother.

what I want to know is where were Maggies parents and family?! Maybe she just had parents, who were in California and told her friends that she had married/had a daughter/passed away, and then died themselves.

I can't believe I've put this much thought into a fictional movie haha

I thought they said Maggie's parents died when she was fairly young. Doesn't Jeffrey say to Vada that he thought they had plenty of time to have kids but Maggie had a feeling they didn't because her parents died young and she felt she would die young too. Or am I remembering it wrong?

reply

I think they didn't know, but that for most of them, that was the beginning of their conversation with Vada that we didn't see. She probably explained everything when she introduced herself, and they may have known nothing about Maggie.

reply

maybe they read about maggie's death and vada's birth in the newspaper.

Believe it or not people did have means of communicating without cell phones and the internet. I know it sounds CRAZY that people back in the day could find out about a friends death without an RIP Maggie facebook group, but it's true. I think you all are thinking way too far into it. All you have to think is Maggie was in touch with at least one of her old friends, Vada's father knew them, and let them know. And then they let everyone else know. Not too hard.

That is so true.

pretty sure her friends would have been informed of her death, just like if one of your friends died you would find out about it.
Vada's dad didnt know any of maggies friends as they lived far away and she started a new life with him, not saying she never called or sent letters to her friends

She'd been dead for fifteen years, I'm pretty sure that the news got to them.
