what song did Vada's mom sing?

You know, the song that Maggie sang in the video that her first husband had. He gave the video to Vada. But what was the name of the song? Is it an original song or a cover song? It is on the ending credits for Mona Lisa Smile.

I was actually wondering the exact same thing, that's what made me stuble onto this site.

This song?

Smile, though your heart is breaking
Smile, even though it's aching
When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by
If you smile through your pain and sorrow
Smile, and maybe tomorrow
You'll find the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
HIde every trace of sadness
Although a tear maybe ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use in crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you'll just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use in crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you'll just smile

It's called SMILE (Though Your Heart Is Breaking)
Words by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons
Music by Charlie Chaplin for his play "Modern Times" 1936

I think this is the song....hope I helped if not sorry.

I just saw the movie for the first time today, and got curious about the song myself... If anyone is still looking, Natalie Cole does a very pretty version, on her album Unforgettable With Love. Pretty funny that I wanted the song, and happened to have it under my nose all this time.

i love the michael jackson version the best.

Smile is a lovely song. Anyone agree?

reply

My two favorite versions are by Barbra Streisand and Linda Eder...:)

reply

The melody to Smile was written by Charlie Chaplin. The words were written by two other guys.

Well they say in the movie about how Vada's mother fit on Judy Garland's star on the walk of fame... so I guarantee thats what they were referencing
