Proof that you don't have to follow the source material to the letter?
The basic premise is there: wearing the mask gives you powers. But the ultraviolence and dark tone is absent. Yet the movie still works fine.

shareI have met some fans of the comic who wish it had been like the comic. I myself like the movie. After seeing Nostalgia Critic's review on the comic, it's not my cup of tea.
shareI'd like to see the comics adapted to a series on Netflix or something. I believe comics adapted to a TV series rather than movies have the best chance of film doing justice to the source material.
shareI think it’s more The Mask didn’t have a huge fanbase so there wasn’t much backlash into turning it into such a goofy movie, whereas there would if, say, Death Note has gotten this treatment.
shareI don't think movies need to be faithful to a T, but it should respect the source material. It's ok to take some liberties but don't go full off rails. Stallone in Judge Dredd comes to mind even though it's still entertaining.
shareI have to admit I grew up in the 90s (born in 1986) and did not know that this movie or the crow were based on a comic until about 10 years ago.
