A sequel would be awesome (SPOILERS)

Get Portman and Aiello back (everyone else died right?) and have her save a new kid. Perhaps this time leave out the awkward age gap love story (I just watched the director's cut of Leon, wow it really turns up the creepy factor to 11).

It could work, if Besson got involved. Mathilda graduated from college and working as a prosecuting attorney, getting disenchanted with "the system", taking care of select cases on her own. But let's not hold our collective breaths.

Totally agree, that'd be awesome. The new Blu-ray Mastered in 4K is coming out today including both the theatrical and extended versions of the film. Woo hoo!

"Mathilda: The Professional"

Please, someone convince Natalie Portman to do this!!!

reply

No, the point of the ending was that she would never have to live that life. Making a sequel would be like killing Newt at the end of Aliens.

reply

Well Newt should have taken over for Ripley but that's another story.

What if somehow reformed Mathilda finds herself, against her will, again, pushed into an unavoidable situation? A clever script would work, and Natalie Portman would be badass!

I had an idea for a sequel, but it wasn't her who was the hitman, it's her husband. He works for a crime family unrelated to Tony's, and she's completely unaware of the fact, but can tell he's hiding something or other. The story was more about the husband and his mobster buddies, with her as a side character, one of many. I thought it was a good concept, but never bothered putting it to paper, since I'm lazy.

So she was in love with a hitman as a kid and even wanted to be a hitman and now her husband is a hitman? Well, what are the odds

Hmm, good points, thanks for your input :p

Having just finished re-watching this, all that I could think about was a sequel with a grown Mathilda. However another poster makes a point that the ending made it clear she was living Leon's wish to stay away from that type of life at the end. Also, I think it would have the dangerous potential of not being as well made, as not having the same energy as the first, being lumped in and confused with lesser female action films with a similar premise like Colombiana.

It is ironic that you mention Colombiana. See this trivia for that movie, also written by Luc Besson:

"The film was based of a script that was set to be a sequel for Leon: The Professional. The story was set to follow Natalie Portman's character Mathilda as she tracked down and killed characters that had wronged her and Leon. Portman's success kept her from availability and the script was eventually re-written into the 2011 film Columbiana."

What is the point of putting "(SPOILERS)" in the subject line when there are no spoilers in your post and couldn't possibly contain spoilers for a movie that doesn't exist?

reply

"Everyone else died" is a spoiler for Leon.

reply

Except it's not accurate so it's not a true spoiler.
