I have often wondered why Luc and Natalie have never worked together since the film Leon.Does anyone have an opinion about this topic? I believe Luc realized that he had discovered a rare talent in a very young Natalie Portman. Mathilda's character was a huge part in this film and Natalie played it flawlessly. Later after the success of this movie I feel Luc did not want to take a chance making a movie with her that did not do well and damage her career in any way I would like to see a sequel to Leon but I believe it should have been made when Natalie was around 20yrs old I believe it is too late now. I would like to see them work together again . MAYBE SOMEDAY THEY WILL!!!!!
Personally, having seen all his films not aimed at young children, read his books, and read every other book and article about him that I could find, I think it is a complete lack of interest in continuing the story. He has written and co-written many scripts that purport to be similar, but not done any of them himself.
Leon was originally written as a favor to Jean Reno during a dark period in his life. Besson wrote that he had great difficulty finding any personal empathy for such a character. His original script made both Leon and Mathilda dysfunctional losers who died in the end. After hiring Portman and seeing Reno's success as a comic knight in 1993, he found a way to rewrite both characters so that Leon saved a much younger Mathilda from a similar fate, and had no interest in a sequel that would make her a professional killer.
As you note, there is no reluctance from either of them to work together, but I sincerely doubt it will ever be in a sequel to this film.
Yea I agree, we will probably never see a sequel. I believe too many years have passed to construct a good story about Mathilda's life up until now. I would like to see them make another film together. Any type would be fine, Drama, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Etc. It would be interesting to see if they still have the same chemistry they had when making Leon.
