Another Gaping Hole In This Movie

How many people has Leon killed as a hit-man? In the movie alone, we see him murder about 20 people in roughly a 6-month period. And Tony tells us that he missed out on some other nice contracts.

So Leon has been murdering dozens of people every year in New York City for decades.

And absolutely nobody knows anything whatsoever about who he is. Not the NYPD. Not the media.

Ridiculous.

Well murder in NYC or the US in general is not exactly uncommon...

>>> murder in NYC or the US in general is not exactly uncommon

Murder is not uncommon. But hundreds of murders all committed by the same person in the same MO over a period of decades is exceptionally uncommon.

Look at the Son of Sam case. Within around 3 or 4 murders, the entire city of NY was in a mass hysteria.

So the thought of Leon killing one person after another for decades without arousing any similar mass hype is impossible, even taking into account the difference in demographics between the victims in each set of killings.

Take the very first scene in the movie, when Leon kills about 10 people. You don't think that that would have been splashed all over the NYC newspapers? And the elevator guy got a very clear look at him. Who else did? And that was just one episode.

This is all very symptomatic of this film: it concentrates solely on the action that takes places in the film, and completely ignores and apparently has no interest in the inescapable ramifications of those events.

What is ridiculous is that the poster fails to realize that this is not a movie that attempts to build on reality. It is a fantasy done in a fantasy style. Almost a comic book style like was done in "Sin City". It is a classic case of someone seeing a movie but completely missing the point of the story.

angling for reactions to stupid claims.

He posted this same stuff here several years ago. After a short while of exasperating people, he admitted that he was just trying to get a rise out of others (complimenting the few who recognized he was just "joking") and he left.

If he was seriously interested in a discussion, there are many older threads here that cover his topics. He just wants to hear his own voice and relieve a little boredom.

Unfortunately, all his old posts here have cycled off this forum now. Reply if you wish to keep him here, but otherwise ignore his bait and he may go back to joking about rape in Deliverance or giving people the benefit of his long experience as a TV-show-watching couch potato.

Seems like you have nailed it!!

I have DFC-2 on ignore. I just saw his comment on this thread because I happened to view the site on a different browser where I am not logged in.

DFC-2 is correct that I sometimes make threads where I am joking. There is even such a thread up right now in the Leon forum.

I also make threads where I am serious, such as this one.

A shame that users like DFC-2 are unable to tell the difference and realize that people are sometimes in a joking mood and sometimes in a serious mood.

We can all guess what DFC-2 will reply to this comment.

Back on ignore.

"I have DFC-2 on ignore," says Snoozealarm

I'd have to say that pretty well represents the height of stupidity. I know that comes across as harsh but it is the best term.

Of all the posters who come here DFC-2 is arguably the most thorough student of Besson films, he makes the most coherent and meaning comments on any aspect of Besson films and here on "Leon: The Professional."

To put DFC-2 on ignore is to say "I don't want to hear the truth, I don't want to hear any coherent arguments, I just want my own opinions without clouding my mind with what may well be the best insights in this fictional movie universe."

I am not as polite as DFC-2 it. Snoozealarm is just an immature TROLL and he continues to prove it.

I encountered this snooze douche on the Seinfeld forum. He started some thread and over time it evolved and myself and other people started talking about a different movie and not about his own precious thread topic.

I say 'precious' because he literally cried and threw a childish dummy-spit and reported us all for apparently being trolls.

In fact, I can all but guarantee that as soon as he sees this, I will be seeing a red warning before I next post.

Peace be your pie.

Regular like clockwork, the other member of the dynamic duo responded to my post. Let me guess what illuminating remark he wrote:

Too bad SnoozeAlarm can't tell the difference between a movie and a documentary.

Am I warm? No? Is it bigger than a breadbox? 

..yea and ET never really visited earth...everyone knows it...I can't believe all those millions of people found the film entertaining.

Just another small thinker stretching the boundaries of his grade school diploma.

Insults, instead of intelligent discussion. Blocked.

The flaw in your ET analogy is clear.

I don't know what illicit ADHD medication you're on but..as a hit man in the movie, LÉON only killed 6 people...not 20.

Of course that fact is as irrelevant as your inane observation.

This movie is easily one of the top 10 movies of the last 25 years. It's pure cinematic art.

Only an extreme simpleton could look for "plot holes" in a masterpiece like this.

You should keep on BLOCKING people until all hope for rational thought is BLOCKED.

BLOCK on dude...

reply

Ridiculous? I can't believe you said that. This kind of stuff happens everyday all over the world. The Police and the Media are totally clueless to these activities. Anyone can get away with murder these days, IN THE MOVIES. I was only Joking!!!

reply

Unfortunately, your frequent replies to SnoozeAlarm posts make you look like one of "his" sock-puppets, an alias that enables him to keep his posts front and center when they would otherwise go off the main page.

This is not his first time in this forum. He was here alienating people several years ago, but finally went away after being ignored. all his posts from that era cycled off the forum long ago.

You realize that "he" has not "replied" to you in months or even posted anywhere in this forum for over a month, yet you have just promoted five of his threads to the top of the page.

Please be kind to the rest of us by letting his threads die a quiet and well-deserved death instead of expending so much effort trying to bring him back.

reply

Don't worry, I am done with him now. I'm kinda new to the forum and his very first reply he accused me and others of criticizing him. That was not my intention at all and his comments didn't set with me too well. I don't like when someone considers themselves superior to me or anyone else for that matter. Unfortunately, I don't get to spend as much in the forum as I would like, otherwise I would have expressed my frustrations much sooner. I had a few points I wanted to make, one of them being, that anyone can post absurd comments. It doesn't take much effort or intelligence. Your right I have wasted enough time on him. Leon is a great film, worthy of a more meaningful discussion. I guess I forgot the real reason I joined the forum in the first place. Maybe that is his whole agenda. Sorry for the inconvenience, I do apologize. I do have to mention of course, that you, yourself have replied to his post quite frequently also and that you have made his blocked list. You realize of course, he is not going away until he is ready. His threads will cycle off soon enough. Whenever he post a new thread he will be front and center again right? Don't judge me too harshly PLEASE, let's all be kind to each other!!!!

reply

Actually, you will not find a single case where I responded to him directly as opposed to someone else, such as I am doing with you. Even then, I have only responded to someone else in one of his threads when someone has made the mistake of putting it on top. He has 11 threads here. I've only responded to people in two of them, and in each case it was within 10 hours of their post and mine was their first response.

I have been in IMDb's Leon forum since 1999, even though this revised version of the forum has only been in existence since 2003. However, I only have created one thread myself. There are many interesting contributors passing through here and I have learned a lot from talking to many of them. I hope that you will also find other people and threads here that will interest you or start some yourself.

reply

Like I said before,I am new to the forum, and maybe I don't understand all the ins and outs yet. The more time I get to spend here the more I will learn. I did apologize if I inconveinced you in some way, I am still learning how the forum works. In your first reply you pointed out some things, that I wasn't fully aware of, so Thank You for that. You are absolutely right there are many interesting contributors here, you being one of them. You are very knowledgable about the film. I learned some facts about the film from you that I wasn't aware of and found them very interesting. I would like to be considered an interesting contributor also and not get caught up in anyone's personal agenda whatever that may be. I have started a few new threads and I plan to start more when I have the time. I hope you will find some of my threads interesting as well. While I'm here I would like to ask you a question. Didn't you mention in a thread that you have Luc Besson's book LEON if so do you know if this book is still available? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Are there any other books about this film that you are aware of that may be interesting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

reply

Here is a link to Besson's 1995 book about the film:

https://www.amazon.fr/LHistoire-L%C3%A9on-Luc-Besson/dp/2910753026/

As far as I know, there never was a published English translation of it. However, you can find parts of it on the Internet, such as the original script he never used that he printed at the end of the book.

I'm a researcher by trade and have collected everything I could buy or find about the making of the film. However, I've never found anything comparable or even half as helpful as Besson's own book. Instead, I have bits and pieces from a book of collected critical essays about him, academic biographies, and lots of articles and interviews.

He is a private man and is against commentaries, because he believes that each viewer should make sense out of the film in his or her own way. His book, explaining how he, Reno, and Portman viewed their characters at the time the film was made is the best guide I know of.

reply

Thank you for your reply, you have been very helpful. I will definitely look into this further. I would love to have the English version of this book if one exist. I may buy the French version, I understand the book has a lot of rare photos that were taken during the time of filming. That alone may be worth the price of the book and another item to add to my collection. I will definitely search more for the original script online. I have seen a few paragraphs scattered here and there but not in it's complete form. Thanks Again!!!!

reply

True.

But, are we sure that ALL his hits happen in NYC?

reply

Fair question. I think that since every scene that we see in the film takes place in NYC, and we see no evidence of the two traveling outside of NYC, it gives that impression. Note that when they moved to the hotel and back to his apt, the film made a point of indicating it. Also, NYC apt's have a distinctive look to them. I say that as someone who's lived in NYC and in several other cities.
