I think the point of her character is that she built her defensive delusions around cartoons, a dysfunctional family, and pop idols. Leon protected her from her absurdities, while showing her she could be safe and loved as her real self. However, as much as any real depressed adult, she was willing to risk everything, including death, for the chance at a grand exit. She wanted to go out like Bonnie and Clyde or Thelma and Louise!
She walked into the building thinking of herself as Optimus Prime disguised as a child. She soon found that all her delusions were shattered, outmatched at the beginning by an experienced and ruthless adult. There was no Optimus Prime, no grand exit. She was just a stupid little girl who had walked into a laughable and boring conclusion.
The film works because Leon's parental devotion gave her the opportunity to reset her life, but what came next was still an open question.
