Hahah i haven't finished the film yet but was definitely wondering the same thing. A little large of a pill to be speed. Also, seeing how he initially reacted to taking the pill - maybe they were something to ease his convulsions.

But: considering he's a hardcore criminal/drug dealer - I assumed they were an upper of some sort - so yea speed lol

I went ahead and checked out the rest of the board.... Apparently this is the accepted answer to your question:

It could be phenobarbital, which is what the gunmen at the North Hollywood shootout used in 1997. Alternately, they could be uppers of some sort, given how manic Stansfield gets after taking them.

I always thought they were custom-made by him (pretty easy to do, really), not some specific brand of drug/pill.

He seemed too calm and collected for them to be uppers like speed/coke and too active and alert for them to be downers.

Whatever was in them, they must've been pretty damn strong.. :D

I think im qualified to answer this:
perscription (STONG) PAINKILLERS from the Opiate/opioid type of drugs. Read all.

I dont think they hade any speciffic drug in mind. They probably gave Gary some artistic freedom on this but for the sake of it lets try to find out what i would have been.

However, having been a drug addicte for a long time (in recovery now) taking every kind of drugs I have long though about this since its one of my favorite movies.

As I said I took everything, up, down, opiates/opioids: (e.g Heroin, morphine, oxy, methadone, vicodine), central stimulants: (methamph/amph, mdma aka exctacy, cocaine and crack coce),
Benzodiasepines: xanax, Valium, Rohypnole (roofies)

Also some other not as well known.

My MAIN was diffrent opiates/opioids most often oxy,morphine or methadone and my SECONDARY was benzo (benzo to boost the opiate rush), mainly xanax. there where the ones i used EVERY DAY. Addictes ussually have a secondary drug either to boost the main drug or take away sideffects from the main drug. Other drugs was on diffrent occations like parties etc but not on a daily basis.

But enough about my history or ressume if you will.

To me it looks like he's taking some kind of opiate/opioid because of the way he acts: I Also love putting my headphones on and litsen to music when the rush comes, its great.
O/O are as im sure you know painkilling and they make you kinda stiff hence the thing he does with his neck which i also do sometimes, sweaty which is a common early withdrawal sympthom which means he need to pop another one, generally calm but can burst at any time like shooting at an old lady for example.

But as i said its probably not a speciffic drug and maybe a mixture of diffrent drugs.
Could for example be some kind of Benzo or even amphetamies which is up (not cocaine as it cannot be taken orally because the body will reject it before having any effect) but its more likeley to be the first I mentiond as the second two doesnt add up as much. So my guess is perscriptioned (STONG) PAINKILLERS from the Opiate/opioid family of drugs.
